I love pbt I have tried one in the past but they are ich magnets. If you qt him first I would go for it. I just never feel like risking when they go in that they would get ich and spread it to my other fish. They can be bullies though but you have a large tank.

If I were going to get a PBT, I would definitely buy a DD one. The only concern I'd have is size as I'm not great with the min tank size for those guys. With the latz, I see no reason not to go for it.

I wouldn't put a PBT in a 4ft tank even if its 3ft wide. They need a lot of room to swim. Didn't you already have a pair of latz?

i think the PBT would have plenty of swimming room in my tank. i've talked about it with a few people before. and yes i did have a pair about 6 months ago but i lost them to brook i believe. the only reason i want to try again is because these are tank bred. i really want a tang though. maybe a kole?

I just added a PBT!!! I just love these guys. To me they are the most beautiful fish available. My plan was to add it last and I put her in about two weeks ago. My Naso chased her around for about 2 days...but she held her ground and they swim happily together now.

I got her from a local reefer parting out his system. So she was in captivity in an established tank for almost 2 years. I feel a little more confident with this than one I get from a LFS where ick and health in general is concerned. This fish was fat and happy when I got her.

Oh yeah...whats "DD".

Good luck!!

I love my PBT and don't know why anyone would choose a different tang! Couple things though:
1) They starve them when they ship them, so they usually look pretty bad when they get here. Something to do with them going blind from ammonia in the bag. If you can, get one that's been fattened up a little or looks fatter. Make sure it's not blind.

2) Agree with getting from DD if you can swing the extra bucks. Mine's from an LFS though, he looked good, had him more than a year.

3) He's gonna kick the butt of any fish you add afterwards. I hung a mirror outside the tank last time and that distracted him from beating up my new angel. I had to leave it there for more than 2 days, it took him that long to get over the angel.

Agreed, they can be REALLY mean to any new tank mates, especially fish that are their size or even bigger than they are. I had to QT mine for a week when I decided to add a CBB(eating!), by the time I had gotten him out, my CBB had a chunk of scales missing on his right side. This was 5 minutes after adding the CBB. I would say that this should be the last large fish you add to the tank. If that isn't your intentions then make sure you keep an eye on the PBT whenever adding new fish to the tank.

my main concern is that it will attack my angel. maybe i should wait for a smaller PBT because theres still a few other fish i want to add. thanks for the help.

While your tank is 180 gallons, I don't think the footprint is ideal for most tangs and especially not an active swimmer like the pbt. A 4 foot tank just won't cut it in my opinion.

i disagree. but i didn't start this thread to argue about my tank being to small for it. i'm concerned with how it will act towards it's other tankmates. thanks.

In my experience, he was very calm. Unfortunately, I had him for a month and a half and thought he was ok! Suddenly he got ich and passed so you must keep a close eye on these guys :(

I used the mirror trick too and it worked when adding a Kole Tang and a Midas Blenny after the PBT had been established for over a year.

I got mine from an LFS without any special processing. He was a bit skinny when I got him but nothing that feeding in the quarrantine didn't fix. I did a full quarantine and unlike most I never had any ich problems despite a good deal of diverse tankmates. I had him two years before I had to break down the display.

+2.

I loved my pbt, but a healthy active pbt is really aggressive. Mine attacked all new fish added so I finally got rid of it. It may disrupt the harmony you have and stress some of your fish. IF you add one do it after you have all fish added for a while and get a nice small one. But only if you really want one, otherwise get something else.

IME my PBT doesn't even notice fish additions as long as they are planktivores. If the new fish doesn't pick off the rocks, my PBT doesn't care about it.

And my tomini is more aggressive to other fish, FWIW. :)
