Thinking of switching closed loop to Tunze

Hello everyone,
I am thinking of making the switch from CL to Tunze.
Current- 2- hammerheads running the CL with 6- one and a half inch outlets each. Returns are 2- 3/4 lockline on each side and a spraybar that is 75% of the lenght of the tank which is 96", also being run by a hammerhead.

Looking at putting in 4-6100 Tunze with multicontroller.

Obviously the returns and the spraybar will stay and am thinking of keeping one hammerhead and putting outlets in the back corners towards the bottom and mid way up blowing to the front.

My tank is 85% sps and if I can sneak the other 15% out with my better half not seeing it I will be 100% sps.

Any suggestions will be helpfull.

Thanks

You can't go wrong with the 6100's.
The Multicontroller is really cool. You can do soo much with 4 6100's and the controller.
I have 4 6000's and my corals love it.

More flow up top is the main goal. Then the noise and then the wattage use and then the heat, although the heat is really not an issue as everything is plumbed into the basement where it is cooled nicely. It seems the closed loop doesn't push enough across the top back and forth. I have even thought of keeping the loop and also adding the Tunze but I think that would be overkill.

Have you thought of using an Oceans Motions 4 way? I have 2 running, one on a dart and one on a barracuda and I have flow everywhere in my 240 cube.

I did the same on my 450 with 4 6100's now and nothing else except the return (and 2 waveboxes). I love it.

The power draw was my main reason but I also like that with a little planning you can't even see the streams.

Having done the same as you propose (almost the same) take my words with a grain of salt. I went from 4 CL with hammerheads (seq 5800 really) to 8 x 6200 streams. Although tunze claims the 6200 put out 5000+ gph, when compared to one of my cl I can tell you it is half at best. My tank with the 8 tunze now have about 2/3 (at best) of the flow of the CL. Also, these pumps cannot reach the middle of the tank (5 ft away), so the middle of my tank has very little flow compared to before. They are also a huge eye sore to say the least. I changed over because of the electrical consumption and nothing else. In that regard, I am happy. I also got the multicontroler to connect all the pumps. For a tank as big as mine, this controller is a huge waste of money. The flow went from OK to mediocre with it, so I disconnected it and sold it within a week.

I don't know how the 6100 compare to the 6200, so that one I will leave to someone else.

I like my tunze (2 x 6100, 2 x 6200), but I fear the day the lower ones quit, because they are now hidden under and behind corals.

IMO, tunze are great for "spot" flow, my waveboxes are great for what they do, and I wish I had a closed loop for hitting the low areas along the back glass where stuff would otherwise accumulate.

So maybe keeping the cl and adding 2 or 4 tunze would be the way to go. My main concern is the health of my corals. I will put up with the noise and the wattage to make my tank as healthy and happy as possible.

i run both, I love the tunzes. The fact that you can position them is a major plus to me.

Paul.

I too am thinking about going to the tunzes. I currently have a 300 Gal with a closed loop that has only two returns. Would a barracuda work on the returns or would the tinzes be better for flow?

wavebox good for top flow, combine with 2x 6100 with controller or 6300 for bigger flow.

Two things I have questions on seeing the tunze boxes as I am planning a 600g.

1) The Tunze wavebox seems to have extremely fast and unrealistic wave action. Does this have to do with the size of tank and is it adjustable? I am planning a 96x40x33 and like the wavebox idea, just not the speed of the waves as they look to fast and unnatural.

2) The noise factor, I would guess the sloshing in the returns and the slosh in the wavebox itself would be a bit noisy as it is filling and waves cresting? I would, myself, be looking for the quietest setup possible and would be very upset to spend a grand to find its sound is too loud for a living room.

I am looking very hard at a CL with a couple 4 ways and making the waving of the coral a bit slower and more realistic but I am still unsure as I have these questions on the tunze. Drilling in closed loop is more holes in my tank and the Tunze could eliminate that, but I won't sacrifice the overal look or noise factor for this.

Thoughts?

wavebox is totally silent. wavelengtha and period are totally adjustable, althought each tank has a frequency that works best.

I have two and LOVE them. (wish they were invisible, but....)

Steve, go with 4 6200's. I have 4 6100's on my 180 and I don't feel that this is adequate flow. Also, a wavebox and extention is a good option as well.
