Third Time's A Charm!

As for the rics, I started with 1 that I bought from Hung for $35 about three years ago. Now I have around 20 of them and I have sold some as well. They seem to do well in every tank I have put them in. They don't mind ultra dirty water and they still reproduce under very nutrient poor SPS conditions. If I could, I wouldn't mind having a tank full of them.

Dang Brad, thats not a good way to start at all. Have you tested your water for amonia, trates, and trites? Are you running anything for phophates? That looks like one heck of a cycle you are going through.

Hope things get straightened out soon.
 
I don't think my tank looked that bad when it started, maybe my 125g. Seriously it looks like someone took a crap in your tank. You got it plumbed to your toilet close loop style, must be your surge ;)

Give it a month and it will all go away, although you could throw in the towel and give me some of those nice rics.

BTW Brad, your aquascaping looks awesome. I can't wait until your tank clears up so that you can start moving in corals.

Here are a couple shots from today. The hair algae is now beginning to look like a kelp forest. I have noticed that the HA is growing primarily off the flat pieces of rock. It makes me wonder if perhaps those rocks have a lot of phosphate in them that is leaching out. On the other hand, it might just be that those pieces are recieving more light. Right now I am only running 2 halides for an hour each day. Until my canopy is completed, I don't want to run all 4 halides for an extended period, due to the humidity issues.

The tank looks very nice and respectful... poop no longer comes to mind ;)

I think that hair algae beats mine from the 125g.

I would say hit it hard with lights. you are probably just prolonging the process, maybe not

I hope you are just kidding. I have never had to cycle a tank from scratch so I don't know what you are going through but it will straighten out and you will be happy when it does. Hang in there, your tank and rockwork are really nice and I see a beautiful reef in there :)
 
You should harvest it and sell hair algae rope that you braid from it...

Or maybe you could make wigs and toupes for bald/balding folks...

Maybe you need to hire some midget divers from france to go in there and you can do midget Jacques Costeau visits the kelp forrests...

I know...I am so helpful.

The tank is finally starting to look ok. The algae isn't completely gone, but it is getting there. I don't know what the water parameters are right now, but they are probably not perfect. I am going to add a few hardy corals in the next few days to see how things do. I probably won't add sps until I get my new skimmer. I ordered a 4ft tall 18 inch Volcano with all the options (wetneck, ozone port, etc.) Here is a pic of the tank from today.

As some of you know, I have killed a ton of fish to get where we are. I don't know what the problem was, but every clown I put in the tank died, while chromis and a royal gramma lived happily. Finally the 17th clownfish to enter the tank lived. Here is the loan survivor. I call him (although it is probably a female) "Number 17".

I added the first coral to the tank this weekend. So far so good. The water is testing at 0 Nitrates, alk 8.6, pH 8.6, and Calcium at 380. I need to bring the calcium up a bit without pushing up the pH, but I doubt ricordea will mind either way.

Now a few hundred more, and the tank should be full.

I can see it now...Brad starts a science experiment to see how long it takes for one Ricordea to divide enough times to fill that tank...
 
I got home today and saw something crazy going on with a ricordea. The rock it is on is broken in two, and it is stretching the ric. I decided to snap a couple pics.
