This hobby sucks

keeping a mature tank of large acro colonies healthy and colorful has to be one of the most challenging things in this hobby

PERIOD.

stupid stonies. Seems that as soon as we get it figured out, it bites back

maybe stupid phrigging stonies is what sps really means.

Kip, Its nice to see your systems have done well...kudo's to you.

Totally agree.

Well im new to SPS and have basically lost my whole first batch... YOU should be glad to have had the ability to grow them out in the first place.. thats an accomplishment and im sure they brought some very fulfilling moments.

Plus all good things must come to a end, its the cycle of life and if we are attempting to duplicated and sustain any life form we must enjoy each moment as if its the last because it very well could be... Just lost a very close human life the week before christmas and my attention on my frags was my distraction, now they are dying but im still in-it-to-win-it ;-)

I learned to enjoy the moment cause thats all life is, a series of moments and there is no better gift than the present..

More this hobby sucks pictures :)!

I can tell you how I got into SPS.
It all started with those first corals. At the time I started I would
have aggreed wit the SPS is boring statement, It does'nt move
fish don't rub up in it, overall it's static. It all started for me by
spending rediculous amounts of time looking at my first tanks.
When you look long enough you start to see smaller and smaller
and yet smaller organisms and details. It's what I would presume
happens to any conosuer <-(not gonna look up spelling).
If you are a wine drinker you would likely progress through the
stages, and learn how to "appreciate" a good wine, whatever that means. I think what I'm trying to say is there is nothing
wrong with whatever your taste is in Aquaria. It is just that the
pinnacle of success in Aquaria is the abiliy to keep these works of
art alive and growing. Even if 99.9% of those who look at our
system have no clue what they are seeing.
So basically we are the snobs of coral :)

so true, half the time my friends look into the tank and only "see" the fish...and then theres the question "are those real coral" then they go back to the fish. !@#@

This thread makes me feel the same way I felt when my Grandfathers best friend pulled in the driveway with his work vehicle.... a hearse.

Looking at the positive, frag's save colonies! I was so ticked when I accidently fraged a milli colony until that colony died and I had the spare frag. After death of the main colony, I immediatly fraged my backup so I had another copy.

having backups like this is like cheating death!

I have an awesome group of reefers (Robz, 143Gadgets and a couple of others that are not on RC) that have frags of all my best stuff.

Man that sucks. I wonder if its pathogenic in nature, either viral or bacterial? Either way, there is probably little that can be done other than cut out the bad and temporarily remove the good pieces to a separate system.

Cases like this remind me of the necessity to bank corals with others so at least its not a total loss. Sorry to hear it dude, I've been there.

Not sure what's going on Ric, but the piece I got from you 8 weeks or so ago from that colony has been receding at the lower portion the last week very slowly.

I am going to cut it back this evening, and put it in my frag tank and see how it does.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

One way or another, we'll keep it going!

The coral overall is rock solid. The dead part was there for months before it expanded. The recession at the base looked 'dormant' but I hacked it seeing it was out of the tank.

Hope yours recovers. Hows the other stuff you got from me?

Here's the one you picked up for me (pic taken last night)

See I don't know if that'd be good enough for me, I mean in this area here if my tank went poop I'm sure I could fill it up with frags in no time at a minimal cost due to everyone's generosity, however it's the time it takes to grow frags to huge colonies that you can't just get back.

But the whole pathogen bit is one reason I think I'm on hold for coral (the other is I don't need any coral as there's no room :D), as I did have some mystery something that took out about 95% of my acropora (unknown reason). If that happened again, I think I'd stick with softies and go heavy fish load and forget the stonies all together.

Everything else is doing very well except for the green tabling piece I got from you. It RTN'ed on me in 8 hours about three days later. No one's fault, just one of those things that we all hate about this hobby.

I'm still debating if I am going to cut this piece. Went home last night and the recession is so slow that it may come back, and I'd hate to slow it down anymore then it is now.

I'm just going to watch it very close I think for now.

I shouldn't have looked at this thread. Now I'm starting to feel bad already on how much I've put into the tank and knowing that one day, I will lose them all.
