...you know that... right? :) noobie question here... but I'm curious...

Still keep my bet on the over, but... I'm just looking around and pricing stuff here...

If I wanted to keep something other than fish... say... clams or something along those lines... or star fish... or something...

I could ask "What do I need?" but I think the better question would be "How much money am I gonna spend?" :)

I know I'm going to need lights... and I know that's gonna kill me (money wise...) but is there anything else I need?

should I take out the second mortage or should I just try and justify selling a kidney... :)

On the other hand, since this is my first saltwater tank, should I wait a year or so before I even think about anything harder than a fish?

no, some corals are easier than fish. You need a tank , a protien skimmer , lights and some powerheads and some live rock.

Well.........

I as well as many others have spent numerous amounts of money on items to just end up buying the right stuff down the road. Trust me......It costs a ton less to by the right equipment the first time than to buy inferior products before hand.

Like I said....You are welcome to stop by anytime and get some ideas of things you will need to keep these items. I would suggest contacting other local reefers and see what they are doing and see what you like. More or less learn from our mistakes! :)

I just talked her into letting me spend $4000 on an engine for my tractor... oh man...

I shouldn't... I really really shouldn't.... oh man... maybe I can convince her my lights reporduced on their own...

no no... I can't... oh man...

I got my mh lights for 125$ shipped , I got my lr for 3$ a lb and I got my skimmer for 250$ shipped. My sump is a rubbermaid container that I got for $5 and my return pump is a via aqua from ebay 40$. 2 mj1200s 15 a peice shipped from a petsmart sale. Everone at cmas is very nice, I have gotten most of my corals for like 10-20$ or free from members here.

The $4000 you spent on your tractor engine? You could probably do it right in a 75 gallon for a little bit less than that (if you want to keep clams, one of the most light demanding creatures out there).

Figure at least a couple thousand, if you can get some used deals from local reefers. Seriously, this isn't a hobby for the faint or the cash-flow challenged.

Ok... fish only it is then...

At least until after the racing season... then we'll regroup and check the money situation...

And if anyone is interested in what $4000 worth of lawnmower engine can dol... check out speed vision tonight at 6:00pm... I drive the #8 BP and the #44 SP... I even think there's an interview with me... :)

lawnmower racing and reef keeping....that's awesome! :D maybe you can get one of the local pet stores to sponsor you, and your tank!!

I wish... I need a sponsor with how much this stuff costs me... and I don't make any money lawnmower racing... none... it's all for bragging rights...

LAst year I spent $10,000... the year before $17,000... this year I'm on a roll already with $6,000... and the season hasn't even started!

Oh and by the way, you can get into harder to keep corals cheaper that a few thousand. You don't mind using "used stuff" right? And if you work on 4000$ lawnmower engines, you can build most of the equipment yourself. Browse around the Dry Goods selling section here on RC, and take a look at the DIY section too. But before you buy anything else...be honest with yourself, and really think about where you want to go in this hobby. It will save you a lot of $$ and time in the long run. HTH

I don't mind using used stuff at all... as long as it still works... :)

yeah, I'm a DIY kinda guy... so don't be suprised someday if you see a thread on me building my own cannopy... :) I'm not 100% happy with the one I have... don't tell my wife though... :)

I know JEEMANN99 has a hood that I built with him for a 110 tall, I know its 48" but I dont know the depth. We had to build a new one because he went to a 400 watt halide and 2 250's so he needed the distance from the water. ask him though I think he would give you a good deal.......maybe you can trade the canopy for $4000.00 lawn service lololololol

Can I get someone to sponser my tank?
Or do I need a sponser for a 12 step reef program?

I love to watch this process, its like being a college senior watching a freshman smoke his first doobie.

This guy will be following the Grateful Reef selling Coralife tee shirts from a van for frags by the end of the spring.

Amen Brother.

Sit back, take a deep breath and go slow.
Don't go with the easy way out, You'll just waste$$$
I'd say nothing smaller than a 75g, Dont bother with fluorescent you can get MH cheap nowdays and unless your going to run a big sump get a good skimmer
