Happy to be here

My acan has been trying to drop a baby for the last couple of months, and it is almost there.

Wow! You sure it ain't melting? If it is splitting that is awesome though!

Nope, not melting. There is actually new growth and new polyps on the baby. I suppose it is possible that I somehow fractured the skeleton at some point, but didn't damage the tissue too bad. Now it is just a matter of time. Like I said though, this has been going on for a couple of months. At first it looked like a deformity in a couple of the polyps of the existing colony...had me worried, but now I am wondering where to put the little rascal. :D

I've had this happend when I break the skeleton and not the flesh of the coral. the weight of the broken skeleton slowly pulls away a frag. Never done it on purpose and only with chalices(I would think an acan would be harder to do this to). The frags basically came off healed as it can take months to drop.

Never seen that before. I'd place a nice rock under it to catch it and provide a place to encrust onto. Keep the pics updated I really wanna see what happenes

it is very cool...but...dont take this wrong. i think what you are seeing is more of a reaction to poor water quality than actually normal reproduction. from the pics it looks like there is a ton of aptaisa, feather dusters and other algae, possibly dino in that tank. all these are signs of high nutrients. i see you have a skimmer and fuge, so thats good, are you overfeeding? again, dont take this as a flame, but i would hate to see that awesome colony meet its demise in a few months.

i think youre acan is from a diff planet.that is so cool isnt it.i saw a pic of a guy who had a blasto do that.gotto love free stuff you helped.my ora red goni drops babies allot but you cant see wahts happening in all those polyps i bet its allmost like that because they have a little coralite to start with.i have to save one next time they allways dropem when im not lokking and my huge nem eatsem.

That is so cool! Have you considered cutting it? I would hate to see it fall off and disappear behind your LR never to be seen again!
Keep us posted w/pics I want to see how it turns out also!

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll take a pic every few days and see how the progression looks. As I said, this process has taken a couple of months to get to this point, but I think it will drop soon.

Here is a shot from tonight before lights out:

nah no cutting here. I might place a small rock underneath pretty soon to catch it and encrust. Here is tonight's pic of the critter just before lights out.
