Those who have crushed coral substrate question for you?

I like the look of CC so that is what I went with. Those of you who have CC how often do you syphon the bottom and do you only do the top layers or go all the way to the bottom of what you can do?

Not a thread about nitrates so please keep it to the question above. I know it is more work to have CC and have friends who have had it in their reef tanks for years with no problems.

I am running about 2-3 inches of bed of Florida CC.

Thanks Scott.

I am currently running BB, but I have had many tanks with many substrates to include CC, oolite, aragonite, liverock rubbel, and many variations thereof. Based on my experience, I would recommend syphoning as much of the sandbed as you can reach AT LEAST once a month taking care to syphon out anything that you disturb.

I have crushed coral in my main tank and just siphon all I can reach every water change which is weekly. That keeps it looking white, never had a problem with it.

I use to syphon as much as I could once a week going all the way down, I had CC with a mix of sand, it got to be a hassle so I went to "BB" also

What size tank? No problems with high nitrates when syphoning it weekly?
