Those with 30"/36" deep tanks (Lighting question)

I have the ATI hybrid 8 bulbs for my 30" deep tank. Works great. I have the T5 on 70% and LED on 30%.

Water line ~450 - 500 par
Mid tank ~300
Sandbed ~180

That's an interesting idea actually. How's your sps growth?

I'm running 2 400w Radiums over a 60x36x24 and liking it a lot. Actually got them from someone here on RC :)

What fixture/reflector are you using? How's the spread?

Are you having any issues with heat?

I am running Luxcore 250/400w ballasts with mogul halide bulbs on lumen bright large reflectors. The actual bulb is about 14" off the top of the water the the spread is really good.

I have the tank in the garage and live in southern California so the heat is somewhat of an issue for me but i have a chiller to offset If you are keeping the tank inside and running a fan across the top between the water and the halide you shouldn't have any problems. It just depends on a lot of factors.

Did you build the rack that holds the reflectors?

Yes, I used a company called Esto Connectors for the aluminum tubing and connectors. It wasn't that hard to build either. Some measuring, cut off saw with an aluminum cutting blade and you are set.

I run a giesmann spectra 48 inch on my 200dd. Trifecta arrangement with 400w 20k radiums, t5, and 26 3w leds.

The LEDs didn't come with the fixture, right?

Not to high jack the thread but i have a 8 ft 300 gallon would i need 4 or 5 of the mars/evergrow? Trying to decide which ones to use for lps and spa
thanks
8 foot doesn't really give us and idea of depth and width, but in theory if you throw enough LEDs at it you'll be fine.

Best way is to measure with a Par meter though.

Giesmann spectra is mh/t5. Giesmann has others that are (or include) leds

Ok I saw you said you had the spectra as well as T5's and LEDs so I was curious if it came with them or not.

So with that single fixture you're lighting your entire 36" deep tank?

2x400mh, 4x54w t5, 75w of leds 200dd is only 27 deep, sorry missed that. However I can grow sps at the bottom

Are you dead set on MH? I have a 8x3x2H tank and use two 48" ATI hybrid T5 8 bulbs. My T5 bulbs and leds are run at 100%. Good growth and good color on SPS. My rock scape is pretty low to the tank, maybe only half way up the tank and I have no problem growing and coloring up sps. My build thread is in this forum also if you want to see my tank. Last page has pics of the corals and fts.

Are you dead set on MH?

Not really. I did the calculation this week. For my tank, I would need to run four to five 400w ballasts. Not taking into account any T5's or running the chiller, the cost for hydro alone assuming I run the halides for 8-10 hours a day would be approx. $3.25 a day

Factoring in that you need to change the bulbs around once every 5-6 months, that's another grand at
least over the course of the year.

Running he numbers, that's anywhere from $2,000 to $2,200 a year just on the electricity costs and bulb replacements and does not include any T5 costs or the cost to run the chiller as halides produce a lot of heat.

For that alone I'm thinking about LED. But I want all sps and I would need 5-6 LED units for this.
