thoughts on kessil A150 Led...

Coit I really am bored to death of this discussion, its going nowhere.

I'm sure I have wrote more than enough on the subject of these lights to ensure that anyone reading this thread gets a balanced view.

So on that note I'm out of here.

Yes really last post on the subject, so go ahead have the last say even if it is meaning less drivel. I do hope it makes you feel good :wavehand:

I agree it's going nowhere :)

If you are interested - look I found something with potentially even worse figures! :)

http://www.diconled.com/product/product_microscope_illuminator_msp.php

I think there is truly an interesting discussion we could have here as long as we took into account:

* application the product is actually for

* bias of measures such as lumens towards certain bandwidths that may not be relevant to an different application

* the effect of intensity / bandwidth / wavelength on those measures given the application - eg - if they had no compensation for intensity whatsoever in their adjustable lights they would also need a sideline in "ze goggles"

I don't pretend to have any vast education in any of the above but it seems like it would be pretty much the minimum common ground needed to have a conversation about it. Again, I think given that this thing has applications in fibre optics / medical imaging / major las vegas style building lights / horticulture - and has been going on long enough to be bankrupt if it didn't work - it might possibly be worth considering that the people making them are not total idiots. Maybe they even made something comparable to (or - gasp - even better than :)) a rebadged house light fitting :)

i don't understand how someone can come on here and trash a product that they have no personal experience with at all. i can tell you that i would be the first person to come onto this website and give these lights the worst review in history if they didn't work. i realize to alot of yall $600 (goose neck included) is not much money to spend on lighting, but to some of us it is substantial. so if i wasn't completely satisfied with them rest assured my tune would be very different. SKIMATE thinks these lights could not do what everyone on here is claiming they are doing. what does he think people are gonna say, they work when they really don't. i mean according to him i'm just an evil person that wants someone else to spend their money on something that doesn't work. you think i'm gonna say they work just to make myself feel better about spending the money on them. that's just plain retarted. i guess he thinks everyone on here is either too dumb to know their corals are dying under these lights or are just liars. you have people on here with real world results. i am upgrading to a euro braced 120g (already have the tank stand in process) as soon as the a-350 comes out. i plan to put the 350 in the middle and have the two 150s flank it on either side. i ran these lights and after 2weeks of having them i decided to sell my previous lighting setup, and haven't looked back or missed a beat.

Serious guys. The lights put out plenty of light. Several local coral shops have converted to them. So did I. They make lots of light. They are good at what they do for the price. Make quality light for relatively little power. Corals grow and color up under them. No bulb changes. Awesome shimmer. The 10k remind me of being 20' down diving in Tahiti. The 15k are like being 40' down. The 20k remind me of 80-100' down.

I completely agree with the exception of the diving stuff as I have never been. I have them over my 125 with a torch coral, goniopora, plate, and a couple zoa colonies that are doing EXTREMELY well. That really is the only thing I care about or need to know about the Kessil lamps. They do as advertised thus far and if not I will give a first hand account of it. As of now, for me, they work, they were a cheaper option, and I personally really like the design and appearance.

I have a 24x24x12 shallow cube, will one keep a nem? I've been reading the thread and I'm kinda lost now. I'm really excited about the aesthetics of this light, even though it's not CREE, lol

i can only tell you from experience. i'm about 6 mos+ in with 2 15ks over a standard 4' 55g with a 6" sand bed. that means he is about 22" away from the light and he hasn't moved yet. so i guess he's happy, certainly looks the same as he did before.

Wait... you had a meaning post in this thread, i must have missed it. Well so long anyway.

i would heve to think that mh was the new thing at some point in time.makes me wonder if they went through the same bashing as the kessil leds.hey mike if your still reading after that blogathon.do you think you need to supplement your kessils or just add more kessils.

kessil a150w 15k ocean blue review

First off I have to say I love love love this light. Color fits somewhere between a phoenix 14k and a xm 20k (a crisp blue/white with pop). Shimmer is very much like a halide but slightly more (not as tranquil but by no means disco ball like). Everything pops just right without being actinic. It's very compact, about the size of can of soda or beer. It's by no means dim like some reviews have said. I get better coverage and brightness than I did running a 24" sunpod running 150 watt halide on the same 20H. It runs fairly quiet, a small computer fan like noise for the fan running inside. There doesn't seem to be any banding of colors, it all mixes so you don't get a small rainbow on the sand bed. It doesn't appear violet like with some LEDs. Best of all it's only running 32 watts I believe.

Now for some pics. I took special care in making sure the color was accurate. I will post two videos once I upload them. Last note: excuse the aptasia as I plan on removing them when I transfer them to my new mr aqua tank.

WOW

Fantastic Color and it appears everything is doing Great.

How Long have you had the kessil 15k ocean blue on the Tank ?

Great Pics/Vids ...

Nice pics/vids. Although I see some peppermint shrimp or a syringe full of kalk in that tank's future :)

Mine should hopefully arrive sometime this week and I'll see how they do I guess.

When they first announced the A- line of lights, there was mention of a few different colour temps they were going to bring out :

3000k
6700k Amazon Sun
10000k Sky Blue
15000k Ocean Blue
20000k Deep Ocean

If you check their facebook they're apparently running controlled tests now on an algae growth promoting light spectrum for aquaculture purposes, but I haven't seen anything about the others. Or anything on when the A-350 series is coming. Anyone know what's happening with those?

So in this online poll the A150 was ranked in the top 4 LED's on the market

nope

That's pretty good. I wonder though if it's more a "what do you own" poll than a "what is the best" poll :) unless there is some army of people out there who have trialled 32 different lighting systems in 2011.

Still an impressive showing for them given that really the first reaction is "Kessil who?" and they only really just broke in to the aquarium trade shortly ago.

Surprised to see the Maxspects beating the Radions there given the huge pull of Ecotech in the hobby. Though the Mazarras were going to be my choice up until I found the Kessils (and probably will be if they don't work out somehow).

Thanks. The pics were taken last week before I got time to kalk past the aptasia. The rock was sitting in my sump for a couple months so they picked up the hitchikers.

I have had the light for about a week now and love it. I threw it on my 75 for reference as well

It is obviously not as bright as a 250watt halide but the color is still great.

As much as i dont think i want to know how many of these and what spectrum would current users recommend for a 36x37x18 mixed reef
