thoughts on kessil A150 Led...

Just want to add that I accidentally dropped one of mine in the tank. I rinsed it out with fresh water, put it above a heater vent to dry it out and the light is working just fine. Unreal!

Hey guys getting ready to switch out my t5s for two sky a150 with an upgrade to 2 more(4) total in two-three months. My biggest concern is will that goose clamp fit on my non-rimless tank. I have a 120 gallon regular a.g.e. Tank with regular black trim. If someone can confirm fit or if someone is using clamps on non-rimless tank, than I guess we r good to go.

Ps..I have emailed the company but have yet to hear a response

Im sure it will fit over the plastic trim, def not a euro-brace

Hello i am currently cycling my new 170 gallon tank which will be a mixed reef. my dimensions are 60"x22"x30" my last piece of equipment i am needing is the lighting i am trying to decide if i want 2 evolution dimmable 200 units which are 24" long or if i should run 3-4 kessil a150 units on my tank. This decision has been racking my brain there will only be about a 100-150 difference between the two choices so thats not a concern. if i have any sps or corals needing tons of light they will be in the top 12" of my tank. Any thoughts or advice would be great these are they two i am deciding on HELP PLZ!!! :headwally:

also i have 3 glass braces running across the top of my tank not plastic so light will penetrate

On that large of a tank I would recommend waiting on the larger version of the Kessil that is coming out soon. It's going to be called the a350, but I don't know exactly when its coming out.

Ok pulled the trigger ordered two a150w sky blue kessils to replace a 4bulb aquaticlife t5fixture , (48") will add one on each side of the center plastic brace, I know I'm ordering two more in two or three months but depending what I see as far as color, I'll order two more sky blues or two ocean blues, I prefer less blue, but I'll definately post some pics of everything.

plus 1
The par numbers posted earlier in this thread indicate over 20 inches of depth will be stretching the limits of the light. The par readings should only be used as a guideline because most par meters don't measure blue light as well as they should and don't measure uv at all. As effecient as the A150s have shown to be in reviews, 32 watts is still just 32 watts. The bigger model will probalbly be 90 watts and have a better watts per dollar ratio based off the companys pricing of their grow lights.

so, I guess the question of the hour is "Will I be able to use two a150w's on a 75G tank?" I have some montis up high in the tank, and several anemones higher in the tank. Mostly Zoas and some assorted softies. I like the idea of being able to have some SPS at higher elevations in the tank, but it's not a requirement. Currently running two 250W SE 20k Halides

I'm not an expert nor do I own an A150...with that being said I think it won't be an equivalent to two lower par (20k) 250 watt halides. Kessil says 4 H350 grow lights (each 90 watt) are equivalent to a 1000 watt halide for growing weed (plants). That equates to leds within their respective optimum wavelengths being 2.7 times as effiecient as halides. I think thats a pretty good ratio to use as a guide (2.7 times more effecient) because Kessil chooses the best wavelength for their product whether it coral or (plants)weed. It not exactly apples to apples plus 20k is less par (growth) than 10k.
A150=90-100 watts of halide IMO. Its been said before that its A150 naming is more to do with marketing and the area that the light covers. Its also been said 2 A150s would be perfect for a 40 gallon breeder tank which is one of the tanks I have. I'm still waiting for the larger A350 for my 40 breeder because I like maxima clams and sps almost exclusively. I know the A150 would do a good job for sps and maximas in the upper half of my tank. I also know it would be great for a mixed reef and definately enough for an lps tank.
I want sps and maximas on the bottom of my tank which is 15 or 16 inches deep. Your tank is larger at almost twice the volume. Its all about having enough light for your tank since its easier and better to have a little too much light than not enough. With a little too much light you can raise the lights, decrease the photoperiod or even potentially dim the light. Kessil has yet to give concrete specs on dimming availability and wattage...price and release date of the A350 so I'll just have to wait because I've read over 90% of all available info on this exciting new A150 and Kessil in general.:deadhorse:

On the previous page a member named globe has a 75 gallon with 2 A150s and said his zoas are doing good but needs time for pics. It will also be a time will tell thing since he just got them. I'd pm him and compare coral layout and placement.

I purchased a Kessil Ocean Blue and really love the way it makes my corals look. I have it on one side of a 40 breeder and a 150 watt MH on the other side. I am going to run it like this for a couple of months to see if there is much of a difference.

The color of the Kessil light makes my brighter corals color more vivid than the metal halide (I think I have a phoenix bulb). Based on the way the light makes my coral look I would choose the Kessil, but I'm going to give it some time.

Thats sweet you can run a side by side test. The best 40 breeder Ive seen was done by a guy named steely running dual 150 watts. Its in a current 40 breeder Fts thread here on RC. Normally I try to copy other peoples success but dont want to use 300 watts of power or deal with the heat. If convienent could you please post pics?

The 150 halides are great for growth on a shallow tank. I'll be interested to see the side by side comparison on growth.

My nano that runs the ocean blue a150w is lps dominant so I can't comment on growth for sps.

I'd like to put 2x Kessil A150's over a 24"x24"x20"H. Would that be enough to support an all SPS tank at all depth levels? Does PAR work that way. Two is better than one?

Thanks,
Ron

With one over that tank you would only be able to do SPS at the top and in the middle(depending on species) If you would like to do full SPS then you will need two.

Pics as promised of my 75 gallon with two 15k ocean blues over it.

Hey all. This is my first post! I have two 10k on my 57 gallon with the same footprint of a 40b. I have amazing growth and coverage in a solid mixed reef. My monti gas gone from 2x3" to 7x6" in 4 months! I'll post pix later.

Thanks for the link to the NR thread. Results are a big part of helping me decide on buying or not. Looks are secondary.

Just placed an order for two Kessil A150's from Marine Depot with goosenecks. They will be providing light for an SPS dominated tank. My new tank set-up will be 23"x23"x20"h.
