Thoughts on Maroon Clowns

If you want more then one buy them that way, trying to pair GSM's in my experience was always been a nightmare. Tiny males/juvi's spent plenty of nights in breeder boxes and it still didn't work out. Lost a few males too. Females are just bossy, pushy, and always agitated.

Great fish though, healthy eaters. Get to a good size. I love em.
For tank size I'd agree with 40. The bigger the better (if you can afford).

Cheers :D

Thats the thing, I don't know if I can really afford that large of a tank. It's really not even the tank, it's the expensive lighting required for keeping corals.
The jbj is a steal! It comes with metal halide lighting for just about $500 altogether.

I'm going to try my best at making ways to afford a larger tank. I'll do some math tonight and see what I can come up with, then I'll let you guys know if I can find a way to do it.

Thanks again

(I don't want normal "Nemos"! lol)

Yeah, most of us have been there.
Some things are cool used to save $$
If you do go w/ JBJ check nano forum for cool ideas/mods.
Despite what may appear as my bashing MC's, fact is I still dig her, she's just being super protective of her nems.
Who knows, she may know something I don't about the corals I place by them, like toxins and such.
She does take good care of her nems, and unlike my clarkis, she's not battering fish, just me.
All new corals will be placed high on rocks, and glued down!

Ahh, memories, years ago she LOVED my hand! LOL

Good times...

Please don't taunt me with pictures! lol
She is beautiful. I really hope I will be able to keep one somehow.
Thanks everyone for helping me out. I'll post back later my "math" results for what I can afford.

GSMs are great fish but they do kill corals. i was at an LFS and the owner of the store put a rock with corals in the tank, and the female moved the rock but it fell on her anemone. i think she ended up dying because she moved rocks around so much :[ last time i saw the fish her back was broken and couldnt move very well, later on i saw it had died. was a very large and beatiful GSM though

Here's that same maroon yrs later, checking her mate out, who's about the same size as she was when I got her.

Beutiful pictures.

I'm still doing my math. I'm having trouble figuring out lighting.

Last night I did some more research, though. I found most websites and books suggested 30 gallons minimum size for a single maroon clown.
I don't know what I'm going to do. lol

There are plenty of used setups around for $500 or less. I have seen several 75s on the auction site in eastern NC for $400 to 600 with good equipment. Save your pennies and keep an eye out. Dont rush into a tank that you will not be satisfied with because when you go to upgrade, and you will, then you will only get 50 cents on the dollar for your stuff.

As for Maroons, they are totally awsome. I have had a GSM for about 6 years. Just downgraded tanks a few months ago from 180 to 75 and decided to pair her up. She was almost 5 inches so found a 2 incher and introduced them to the 75 at the same time. Took about 2 weeks and now they are tied together at the fin. Wherever she is, he is right behind. Beautiful fish!

And yes, she bites my hand and knocks stuff over but as long as I keep stuff a good 9 to 12 inches away from her cave in all directions, she is fine. It is totally worth the trouble.

Thanks Gold Stripe. I totally agree with you.
I think I would rather start a new tank myself, though... just for experiance sake.

I did some math today and figured if I spend about $150 more and do my own set up rather than buy the jbj cube, I can do a 40 gallon. So right now, the 40 gallon is what I have planned, even if I have to wait untill Christmas.

Thanks for the encouragement

Matt

One more question...

If I keep one singly (possibly with a nem) in a 40 gallon, is there a possibility that it will stay a male? Is there a way I can prevent one from becoming a female?
