Thoughts on my aquascaping-pic

Discdogge

New member
Recently, I posted a pic to show my new 70w halide for my 24g aquapod on my club forum, and a response was

"whats with the aquascaping?"

and that it just looked like a pile of rocks with a freshwater base rock just "dropped in".

I wanted to post a pic and get some feedback and suggestions. My tank is less than 3 months old.

The poster also did not like the corals in the sand in the front. some explanation:

The torch and frogspawn are temporily placed there, the tank is new and I plan t have it mostly dominated by zoos. Therfore Im placing them first on my rock.
The plug with yellow zoos is growing more before I attach it.

The base rock has many small zoo frags attached for further growth and then the rock will be removed when it's covered in coraline for our 180, as I think it's too big for my 24g.

All this was explained to the poster.
I find the comment as rude as if seeing someone and saying " hey you look like crap today"

anyway, feedback and suggestions are welcome, as are any questions.

Thanks,
Linn

For a 24 gallon, I'd say it looks good. I wouldn't subscribe to the pile of rocks comment, as I can see that you are trying for a bridge or swim through or something. perhaps, you have rocks a bit too large for that size aquarium though. Rocks should be kept in the proper perspective of the tank they are placed in. This may be what spawned the comment. As far as everything else goes, looks like you're on the right track as the livestock looks healthy and happy.

Just remember, when you put something out here on the net, you're posting yourself to 1/2 million people. And with a comment like "whaddya think? " some people just can't behave themselves. In a like thought pattern, you should also remind yourself that even if we all jump on and turn this into a 200 reply count thread, nothing anyone says matters if you can look at your tank and be proud of it.

Good luck with the nano, Looks like a good start.

I think it looks great but I do agree that the middle donut hole rock looks out of place with the rest of your aquascape. If you take it out I think the tank will look really nice.

Hey, if you like the way it looks, that's all that matters. You're the one who'll be looking at it day after day. Looks cool.

I agree with you 100%. There's always something you could do to change the way it looks but if you are are happy and that's all it matter.

Discdogge and Nik,

I believe those comments are just made in the club forum to provoke Nik into a debate. That is why I did not respond in that post. If you have a plan for your tank then go with it. I believe the "donut hole rock" could be placed differently but once it purples up it will not stick out as much compared to your other rock. Here is a picture of our aquascape when we first started our 24g about 8 months ago. The tank was six weeks old at the time of the picture.

By the way the 70w looks great on the tank.

Keep it up,

I agree, do what you like. Who cares what other people think. As long as the inhabitants are healthy then all is well.

Thumbs up!

I like it, and I agree that as long as you like it it doesn't matter what otherr people think. I also agree that the "out of place" rock will look alot better when it purples up. The only thing I would consider doing is moving the "out of place" rock off center.

My 2Ã"šÃ‚¢

I had some sort of feeling that was his goal. That rock donut hole rock is mostly in there to get things growing on it because its going to be placed in our 180g when its setup. It was a very porus rock and I thought it would be great for beneficial bacteria plus the cave/hole will be pretty nice as a bottom base of the pile rock.

Discdodge,

I think your tank looks great! You've got a nice cave area for fish (many fish that are suitable for a nano like such an area). Plus, you've got some surface area on your rock for corals and such. I think its tough chosing rock for a nano because many of the interesting peices are too big, and the 'rubble' section has no shape at all usually.

LOL, you're fish club would have a grand time taking pot shots at my aquascape. Its basically a big rubble pile. I love it. It reminds me of a big hill in a meadow or something. *shrug*

I think it looks good. I think the only thing that looks a little weird is that the rock on top doesn't really match the other rocks, but thats no big deal because i a little while it will look like the rest and then it won't matter or look out of place.

only thing i can think of, is getting more live rock, and maybe use that piece of baserock as baserock isntead of having it showing.

but i know live rock isnt free, so that does look fine in the mean time

You'd probably have a little more fun organizing smaller rock pieces... but you have to work with what you can find, and who cares what others think? Make it appealing to you. Hell, some people liked mine, others thought it looked bare and said to add more rock. I don't want a rock wall, so to each their own:)
