Thread on Water Changes

I used to do 20% weekly on my 40b w/ 20g sump. Now I do 20% biweekly and the corals have grown quite considerably more. It seems to be less stressful on everything as well.

hmmm. i never thought of it that way. i might try that, less frequent water changes, less stress.

i currently do a 15 gallon water change weekly on my 75 gallon + 50 gallon sump.

after reading your post, i'm thinking i might try 25 gallons every 2 weeks just to try. :)

Is a big NO NO... Unless you are going out on a boat pretty far out to collect the water.... All the water is contaiminated from chemicals and stuff along the beach areas. It is best to make your own.

Plenty of people collect it and use it.

You don't need a boat you just need to be away from fresh water run off spots and industrial zones. The tide takes care of the rest. Its a good idea to run it through a micron rated filter or bag just so you don't get a parasitic pod of some Godzilla like proportions.

If I lived close enough to the ocean you would bet I would be out there with a pickup truck, 300g water tank, and a sump pump with a sponge on it.

Also know some reefers who leave the NSW in SEALED ( no evaporation out, no O2 in) containers either in complete dark or full sun for a week...kills anything that was alive, keeps the minerals and salinity. Of course it won't do much for fertilizers, etc. As mentioned before, also want to collect from as deep as possible, as far off shore as possible, and on an incoming tide.
