Threaded pvc fittings

Good quality thread tape yes. The kind that you cant squish easily is best

Also, do not over-tighten. Threaded PVC has tapered threads and has a spec to tighten to. If you over-tighten, you can crack the threads and it will leak/fail.

Non-hardening thread sealant intended for pvc is what you should use..
I use this because its easy to find..

"Teflon tape" is really intended for metallic threads only..
Here is an article from one of the leading pvc fitting manufacturers that says to not use teflon tape..

^^^What both of them said^^^

I must if done something wrong. I used thread tape on all my joints. No leaks yet in 2 years. (Knocks on stand)

I used teflon tape on my PVC fittings for years and never had a leak or failure. During the build of my new system I learned more about proper plumbing with PVC.

The common misconception is that 1: thread tape is needed on PVC and 2: thread tape creates the "tight/waterproof" fit.

PVC threads are tapered and as it gets tighter, that taper creates the "waterproof seal". The fittings have a spec to tighten to which will be watertight. Finger tight plus one or two more turns. You should use PVC thread sealant, not teflon tape or teflon paste.

People think the tape makes the seal, or the tape allows you to tighten just a little further to get the best seal. Both of these are false beliefs and may lead to failure. I used to believe both too.

Certainly there are many instances of using teflon tape on PVC threaded fittings without failure, however its not good practice and increases chance of failure.

Correction. I used thread tape on all my threaded joints. Not all my joints. Auto correct should be called auto typo.

I will definately use proper sealant in the future. I tried potable water soft set sealant before on a non-aquarium application. The stuff stank to high heaven and the smell persisted for over a month. Did not trust it even for drinking water which it was used for. I'm very open to a good brand safe for our precious reefs though.
