I kept a yellow head tilefish, Hoplolatilus fourmanouiri, for approx 2 years back in 2008. I don't see it for sale anymore. Mine was 4" or so, quite active and an aggressive eater. It would blow into the sand to get the food pallets off the sand bed. It sleeps in a PVC L shape tube within my rocks. Get along with other fish and mine was reef safe. Cool fish, would get another if I ever see it in my LFSs.
I've had one for 3 years. Had a pair but one launched itself out of the tank despite a heavy lid after 2 years...still not sure how it got out. They need a lot of open swimming room and frequent feeding.
I think besides shipping stress they suffer greatly from being placed in tanks with more aggressive or larger fish. If you have large wrasses, dottybacks, etc. I would avoid it. If they are "king of the tank" they can be very bold, active, and curious. Mine bites my arm when I work in the tank while all the anthias hide.
Kept a pair months ago, very beautiful fish imo. My parents likes them very much. Lost them to a freak live rock accident. Currently am keeping 3 flashing tilefish, not as attractive as the purples but I purchase them due to the flashing ability but once stable, they do not flash much. Will be purchasing the purples ones again if I happen to see them at the lfs.
After buying 2 tiles, I can say many things about them, such as beautiful, moody, but not tough. These guys are extremely shy and I can hardly get close to the tank. I wish I could see them all the time.
