Time for that next build...

Everyone is breaking down and setting up recently, so add me to the list ;)

Seems like every year around this time I have a major project. Five years ago I brought up the first tank. The next year it was the basement sump and first GEO skimmer (and it's been nothing but GEO craziness since). Then the 180 and monster custom acrylic sump. Then the migration to the 200.... Which leads to apparently this year's task...

Long story short, my time to maintain the tanks doesn't exist like it use to. The twins are will be celebrating their first birthday in a few weeks. I use to spend in a day what I'm lucky to spend in three weeks now on my tanks (and don't get me wrong, the twins are a blast). My corals and systems aren't doing "bad" per say, but they aren't blowing up with growth like they use to. I've decided I'd rather have a smaller easier to maintain system that's flourishing big time due to not having many requirements, than have the larger systems with lackluster growth. For that reason, I'm going to be getting back to my roots with a LPS dominated system (maybe a SPS monti or softie here or there)... At least for a few years until things kind of clam down a bit.

The decision has been a long time coming. I've decided to break down both tanks, and go with a somewhat smaller one. I've talked about breaking down and redoing my LPS tank for over a year now. There are a ton of options for "smaller" systems out there. I'm working on some numbers for the smaller Marineland cubes right now (the 24x24x24 or 30x30x24).

As time is not abundant, this will be a slower process that certainly isn't completed overnight. The list is long of things to accomplish:
  • Empty the frag tank of all SPS (beyond the one or two pieces I will keep, easy ones like the encrusting monti's)
  • Make a decision on the anemone and clowns. My orange ocellaris have been with me since the very beginning (second pair of fish after the gobies), and are probably apporaching five years old. They're EXTREMELY active breeders on a very quick cycle. I also have my black ocellaris that are about four years old, also breeding like crazy. However, with only one main tank, that leaves me with an extra pair of clownfish. Not sure if I keep them somewhere, find them and the anemone a new home, or what.
  • Break down the 58. I've moved a ton of corals out of this, so it's not a HUGE deal. But I need a ton of frag tank space. The acans, 8-10" open brain, 80-100 heads of porkyspawn, etc all will take up considerable room.
  • Sell off all my SPS colonies in the 200 so it can be emptied and broken down.
  • Decide what hardware to keep, what needs to be sold, what I want to keep for later use or reallocate, and what needs to be reevaluated. I know the deep dimension marineland 200, the 58, the lighting for probably both of those systems, and some pumps (panworld) and power heads (vortech) will go. I also have to determine things I want to change. My water volume will drop quite a bit, so do I keep my monster skimmer and large sump? More than likely, but I have to think it through in detail.
  • Hardware fire sale
  • Cook all the rock I have (which is a considerable amount), and decide what I want to keep.
  • Acquire and setup the new tank. It will probably be in the computer room as my 58 is now. It's an easy place I can keep things "safe" and locked off for now.
  • Tidy things up.

As I said, not going to be done tomorrow ;) I'll likely start the early phases in the coming weeks since I have a LOAD of vacation time. We didn't even take a vacation this year, for obvious reasons. I'll probably try to get the SPS in the frag tank gone and 58 broken down by the end of the year, but obviously that depends on the economy and who's interested in frags. To be clear, when/if I'm selling things, I'll start threads specific for that. This is not my sale thread, but the "build thread" I always do when I make changes.

As always, I'll be documenting as I go, hence the reason to the start of this thread. Learn from my success, or abysmal failure. Either way, it should be fun. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it

Just bought a new (smaller) tank myself today that ironically is being set-up in my office. Ran into the exact same challenges you cited...kids rock but certainly reduce time spent with the tanks.

BTW....and I'm laughing as I say this....I just moved the Oceanic 105G up from the basement this afternoon. You're still welcome to it but I'm guessing you no longer need it :)

Keep us posted. I love a good build story. Be sure to add a ton of pictures too. I know that when I was first getting into coral keeping that seeing other's set up with details about the whats and whys sure helped me.

 Sean. I was going to see how the Marineland pricing was looking, then hit you up. What tank are you going for?

Yes Briney Dave, always a ton of pictures ;)

Very, very simple! Just a 20G high with an AquaticLife 24" T5 HO 2 Lamp Fixture and an AquaClear 70 HOB. Just planning to have a shallow sand bed, less =<30lbs of LR and a pair of clowns with host anemone. Will add a HOB skimmer and fuge if necessary but plan to avoid a sump if possible.

Will post some pics soon!

Just let me know about the tank...it's not going anywhere ;)

Couple pics of tank....

What's been done:
- Black Krylon on the back of the tank
- Egg crate cover
- AquaticLife 24" T5 HO Fixture
- AquaClear 70 HOB

We just got pricing on the 24x24x18 w/corner overflow and are in the process of planning the build which will be a few months down the road

RokleM - they had one of those smaller marineland cubes in stock at AA last time I was in there if you want to take a look at it.

Haggarse - sent you a pm regarding 105g if Rokle isn't interested. Thanks!

Day one of vacation, and I'M ON A ROLL ALREADY

Last night I purchased and setup what I think is the light I'll use over the new tank, a LumenMax Elite. It's setup over the sump right now for the clowns/anemone holding area.

The 58 is no more! I've been wanting to break this down for a newer tank now for a couple of years. Feels weird to finally have done it. I just didn't realize I'd be overhauling my SPS tank at the same time...

WE DEMAND AN EXPLANATION! Umm, we were like happy and stuff... and then all the sudden we're yanked out of the water and put into a new spot...

Old rock from the 58 is in a tub (minus the onethe anemone is WAY buried inside). I'll probably get rid of it since there is a ton of GSP, mushrooms, etc on it. Not bad for many people, but won't have a great home in the new tank.

Got porkyspawn?!?!?! I left the vortech in the picture so you realize the size of those two colonies. That's AFTER fragging them for the swap and numerous other times since, and not the parts I broke off accidentally.

A hint at some of the inhabitants of the "new" tank. They've been waiting on me for a while now. Most were 1-3 polyp frags.

Big daddy that came out of the 58. The most ruthless coral ever. Don't mess with the orange echinata! IT IS NINJA.

Oh no wait... that was when I first got it... How about this? ;)

Big daddy brain. I lost track of the mouths. It's still pretty irritated from being fully deflated so I didn't rip the flesh (1-4lbs of water inside a coral is pretty rough when picked out of the water). It will be the full size of the 8" bowl when inflated again.

Next on the task list tomorrow is getting the 58 torn down and out as much as possible. Also, cleaning up the basement and getting the rock cooking stations ready.

that's an awesome nem! green with purple tips ... makes the clowns pop out rather than orange clowns in RTBA you see a lot ... kinda makes me want a green nem. ;)

The 58 is gone and out the door. The only thing that remains is the old light. The 200 has a decent chunk of the coral gone, but a few big colonies left. As soon as the slimer is sold, I have enough space in the frag tank to break that one down as well.

I have a MSX-160 that I picked up used for a good price, ready to work on the rock I want to get prepped. It's attached to a 100g poly.

I'm not 100% sold on this look, but I enjoyed the pretty open look of the 200 and think I'll partially replicate it in the 93. I need a bunch of sand space for my brain and other sand corals, along with a lot of shelf type of space for the acan colonies I'm already growing out.

Not the final look, but the one I've liked the best so far. Kind of hard to get a good picture of. The blue strip on the right is the tank boundary, with the front to back being just slightly too short (25-26 or so when the tank is ~30).

There are a ton of options for "smaller" systems out there. I'm working on some numbers for the smaller Marineland cubes right now (the 24x24x24 or 30x30x24).

I haven't had a reef in 3 or so years. I am starting to go throught some serious withdrawal. I too have been looking at a cube 24x24. Im in mansfield and can't find any around here. I was wondering if anyone has priced out a 24 cube with or without rim in the columbus area? The best price I have seen is at glasscages.com, but they only deliver to the area once in a while. Thanks

  • 58 has been broken down.
  • The 200 was broke down this last weekend.
  • The dry rock is "cooking" (my style) with a nice 48" VHO freshwater light I picked up this weekend, but I need to add a piece or two of liverock to the container.
  • Need to get the rest of my old hardware up for sale.
  • Need to get a slightly larger container and skimmer on the old liverock that came out of the 58 and 200.
  • Probably end up rearranging and painting the computer room since the tank isn't in there now and who knows the next time I'll be able to do it. Half tempted to replace the carpet with wood.
  • Working on acquiring the new tank.

Been a while since the last update, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy ;)

Sump went offline on Friday, Frag tank is offline today. For the first time in a lonnnnnng time, I actually have only two tanks  One 100g poly rubbermaid for the rock that cooking, one 100g poly rubbermaid that has all my corals and fish.

George is working on some goodies for me and the new tank is on order. I have most of the design done for the new sump.

I removed almost all of my corals from rocks, frag disks/plugs, etc in an effort to remove any algae what so ever that might remain (bubble mostly).

Horrible pictures, but this is what remains:

Right now, nothing really for sale per say. I have three large colonies of porkyspawn heads, of which I only need two and will sell at some point. I probably need to thin out the ricordia as well since I have 40-50 or so.
