Time to Change GFO?

There's red cyano growing all over my GFO. :thumbdown I put some GFO in a mesh pouch, in a HOB filter about a few months ago. So far the cyano is limited to the GFO and a tiny spot on my sand. Time to change it? And does anybody have any clue as to why the cyano is pretty much isolated to the GFO? The cyano is red, so maybe it uses some iron from the GFO?:hmm3:

GFO from my knowledge wont control cyano. Also your HOB filter isn't probably pushing the water through the GFO. I know as far as phosphates go with GFO its all about contact time. The more contact time your GFO has with the water going through it the better it is to take out the phosphates. I also have a bio pellet reactor and they say thats all about flow through. But i don't think GFO has anything to do with cyano but i could be wrong

Gfo won't do much in a bag. Your phosphate is most likely rising causing the cyano. IMHO get a reactor or ditch the Gfo and use somthing like phos e. you just throwing money in the toilet with the Gfo in a bag.

I would change it or at least pull the bag and rinse in RO water. If your GFO is a couple of months old it is probably exhausted. Isn't you tank heavy with micro algaes?? I would think you would run with a trace amount of phosphate just to sustain your growth. Vaccum the sand where the cyano is. I had an outbreak once in my old tank and it was in a low flow area so I had to rearrange power heads to get flow into that area. It took a while to get it completely gone scrubbing the rock and vaccuming the area. I would get it before it gets out of hand. imo

Yeah, my tank has a strange balance with some of it's chemistry LOL. I do have a few Macros, and I had a problem with hair algae. But, 8 turbos later and some GFO in a bag, I haven't had the HA come back. The macros are doing good and my chaeto is really sturdy stuff. I thought it was really strange that I had some cyano pop up on a bag of GFO of all things LOL. Does anybody know of any good links about how to properly run GFO?
