Tips and Tricks on Creating Amazing Aquascapes

Here is my latest attempt. 1st is a top down all mocked up on the floor. (excuse the toes)

The second is in the new tank.

I would ditch the egg crate, It will only cause you nitrate issues down the line. I really enjoy the scape. One minor thing is hitting that "other" intersecting point of the "rule of thirds" I would get another rock to make the right side a little higher than the left and make sure to get one that tapers off like a mountain.

This is a great thread doing a 120 build right now and i will follow this thread Forsure thanks everyone and there is some really great looking tanks on here what's the best expoxy or glue to use that's very strong

Possible 'scape for a 90 gallon build I about to start. Thoughts....

I wanted to get the rock higher but can't seem to come up with anything that just doesn't look like rocks piled on top of each other.

This is going to be a peninsula build.

Excellent thread veganbrian! As a fellow artist/photographer, I must say you are spot on with your recommendations. Its fun to see peoples scape going from "Oh boy" To "Oh yeah!"

I am really impressed with your patience with all the critiquing requests. Youre the man! Keep it up

I have debated the egg crate back and forth for a while and since this is my first glass tank in a loooong time I decided to err on the side of caution. I am a little OCD about cleanliness so we will see. I also was thinking about moving the "pointy" rock that is in the back next to the left pile on top of the right to give a little more height.

As the OP has recommended I would "divide your tank into a 5::3 ratio and set the two structures accordingly, moving the space between them off center. I would also eliminate the rock at the back that connects the two structures so that you will have sand all the way to the back wall. Finally, angle the structures in relation to one another so that the "canyon" runs at an angle front to back. Nice rock by the way.

fishcatdog66,
very nice aquascaping, I like it a lot! it would be neat to see what it would look like with the right side as more of an "island" with a channel between the two structures.
nice work!:)

What size tank is that (LxWxH) and how many lbs.'s of rock did you use? it would be neat to see different views of the tank as well.

I am getting ready to redo my 180 gal. soon and I really like what you have done.

keep us posted!
Thanks for the input. The tank is a standard 180. 72x24x24. There is about 180 lbs of dry rock in so far. I haven't changed the arrangement yet but here are more pics.

Beautiful, lots of room for open sand (resist the temptation to put "stuff" on it!) and plenty of space on your rock for your corals to grow out. Well done.

This one is very cool also. Will look great with corals. Only thing i can say is to ditch the egg crate.

If you have posted on here and your tank is maturing, I would love to see your scapes with some corals so we can see the next aspect of aquascaping. The coral composition can be harder than the placement of rocks. Lets see em!

I'm thinking you should do 2 structures and probably get more rock so you can shape the pieces yourself. You're doing more of a "tower" look which is ok, But not really what was discussed in this thread. Its a different approach to scaping. I love the pukani pieces though :). Another thing im curious about is that overflow. If you're doing a peninsula build then you would probably want the overflow on one side and not the corner unless you plan on covering it somehow.
