Tip #1: Always replace your snail guards. Last night I was cleaning out my refugium. I removed the snail guard in the drain because it kept gunking up. A few hours later I was watching tv when my water alarm went nuts. I discovered my refugium was overflowing everywhere.
A snail had wedged itself in the drain and made a perfect water tight seal. An hour later I finally got it out. Thank God for union fittings.
Tip #2, invest $10 in a water alarm. I can think of several occasions where my $10 water alarm has saved me THOUSANDS in water damage.
