so i got my new tank set up with a ramora hang on the back fluval 405 and a few power heads. i got all the live rock and a few fish anything else i can do to make this right?
tips on cycling?

bring the fish back to the fish store till your cycle is comple.

I too have a Fluval 405 for my tank and I would reccomend taking out everything but the carbon and filter pads. The bio material in the canister will give you issues with nitrate (at least that is what I was taught when I set mine up).

Allow me once again to take this opportunity to advocate the use of Dr. Tim's One and Only. After removing the fish, why don't you buy some and pour it in your tank, get the ammonia too. Bring your ammonia up to 1 ppm, just follow the instructions it's easy. Your tank will be cycled in no time (think days). If you do this, please post your results (i.e. daily ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels) so we can track your progress.

First, take the fish out until the cycle is complete. Change your Fluval 405 because it's made for freshwater aquariums only (Company won't tell you that). If you don't, then just wait for a couple of months and you will see problems increasing (You will remember me then). Trust me on this

I disagree with this 100%. The Fluval will cause issues if you have anything other than carbon and filter sponge in there, its great for filtering out some chemical issues. I have had my 405 up for a year and have had not 1 problem whatsoever.
Please post what issues he might run into and facts to prove it as I am personally not aware

My house came with a SW tank with a 404 Fluval. I tried to use the 404 and all of the seals were bad. The filter leaked out of the top like a sieve. I don't mean between the o-ring seal, I mean the top itself was leaking. I tried to take it apart to see if I could fix it and all of the screws were totally rusted away. So yes, I do not think the Fluval's were designed with SW in mind. Not that you can't use it for SW, but use with caution!

Saying is you got it with the house, was it dry or was it in use at the moment? If it was just left sitting there, then I would think that the rust and damaged seals happened because of the sitting there and not in use and not likely having been cleaned of salt. I do agree it should be done with caution as it need be taken care of to ensure no issues with seals. I am fairly dilligent with the cleaning of maintenance of mine and have had no issues with seals, rust, etc. Def need to take care of it

Back to subject..cycling tank is not much to it...first I wouldnt run carbon during cycle will get rid of any bacteria growing.....some ppl but dead shrimp in tanks to spees up cycle others use chemicals or if you want it old fashion just sit and wait. Now cycle stage is prob the most hated part of SW hobby because we all just wanna jump in and add fish....was me in first tank :/ not good. Just waited out test water every week till u have no ammonia no nitrates nitrites and you will be good

alright thanks for all the advice! this is a huge jump from my planted discus tank. first off in the 405 i have no sponges but i have 4 bags of chemi pure and 2 bags or phos-zorb. i have left 3 dead fish bodies in the tank since i was unable to return then before the died. in way of the lighting i have a low output coral max t5 so i believe it is a total of 36 watts. i am looking at getting this

in regards to getting the sump i would love to have gone that way but i simply cant afford it. and the space is limited.
