I was wandering what you guys would do in my situation.

The tank Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m setting up is 30inwide x 30in deep x 14in tall. I am building a canopy that will be hung from above the tank. I would like to keep some SPS & some softies.

Would you go with a 400HQI or not? If not, why & what would you get?

Couldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t I elevate the light high enough off the tank to not burn corals or overheat the tank?

You'll be better off to get a 250 MH. A 400 will be overkill for a 14T tank. And it will overheat it. You can do a 250 HQI. JMO

Maybe others will also chime in and it will help you to make the right choice. My vote goes for 250 or 250 HQI

I keep my SE400 12-13" off the surface on a 29gal. With a fan, I have no big heat issues. I get about 1/2gal evap during the day
