to Chaeto or not to Chaeto?

so i recently removed my chaeto because i dosed reef flux (a great bryopsis/gha killer). since removal i havent noticed any change in my nutrient levels. I still struggle to keep any nitrate present and my phosphates are consistently .02 - .03. i figure d that after i removed the chaeto, i was going to see a big fluctuation in nutrient levels.... but now i wonder is it even worth putting back in the sump? i have a bunch of rock in the sump, i feel that should suffice... just curious what others' opinions are.

thanks

happy hump day

i dont know about reef flux but i dosed something else for GHA and it didn't kill the Chaeto....

Whats the scientific reason for NOT adding it. I can list a ton of logical/proven reasons why you should. Just curious why you think you shouldnt?

I see it in the general forums from time to time, like the people who say they dont want to run a skimmer.....

I used to have chaeto and my sump was always a mess. I dumped the chaeto and added rubble and my system actually started to look a lot cleaner. When I pulled the rubble, I was amazed at all the crap that was in the rubble. I cleaned the sump and added a second skimmer and my reef looks better than ever.
Cheers! Mark

So I have had it for many years and I don't have any scientific reason for not running it. It does make my sump messy. The chaeto light spills into my return section. Algae grows all over and I would rather it not. That's about it though. I assume it helps with pods but I'm not very worried about that.

Lol some tanks don't need a skimmer!

A second skimmer?!?!? How do you keep your nitrates from hitting zero?

I've run chaeto and no chaeto for years, didn't help with controlling po4 or no3 with my systems. It does add place where critters breed and that's a good thing, but negligible effects for nutrient control. I think on a refuge close to the size of the main system it would probably make a significant difference.

I agree with this. I remember seeing somewhere that in order for a fuge to work to its full potential it has to be massive. So my 10-15 gallon area for chaeto on my 125 gallon system wouldn't make a big difference.
