RC gang,

I hope all will chime in....

The tinkering time has come up recently and Ive been struck by the mood to play with the equipment on my tank...

Im thinking of adding a second Vortech pump to my reef... The original mp10w is humming along as always.... and I'm contemplating adding a second to the opposite end of the tank...

Ive always wanted to experience evened out flow so half the sand bed won't be on one end of the tank!!!!

Besides, who wouldn't want two pumps on anti-sync wave mode, imagine my giant frogspawn visually with that going on!!!!

For the sake of understanding, this is a 34 gallon... a 36x16x16 display...

Can you guys offer me constructive advice on the matter? Im undecided if an mp10 will suffice, or for future purposes, splurge on the over-the-top mp40....

Thanks.

On my 40B (almost exact same dimensions) I never loved my flow until adding a second MP10. I tried one MP10 and a Koralia (to fill in the one end) but it still didn't quite cut it IMO.

1 MP10 and Koralia

6 months later (second MP10 was added 4-5 months before this pic)

Impulsive decision pending!

So that was easy....

Now... another mp10, an mp10wqd..... OR..... an mp40wqd.......

Depends on what you want to spend. I don't care for the wireless thing with Vortech's. I always ran my MP10s on Lagoon or Reef Crest and just let them do their thing. I don't need sync, anti-sync or anything like that.

I haven't heard a QD in person to give any opinion on that. I might upgrade my MP10 to QD if I ever get this tank set up.

I had an mp10 and mp40 on my 40B, and the flow from mp40 was just too much. I had to reduce it to 30%. But, using it as such reduces the effectiveness of Sea Crest mode. Now the mp10 is running solo at 70%.

My mp10 has November 2014 build date, so it's quiet enough for me.

the QD vortechs are so much better. My original MP40s were loud as anything but the quiet drives are a huge step up in noise, my fans on my lights are louder then the quiet drives and the lights are in a canopy. Also the mp40 quiet drives put out a lot more flow then the originals. I think they say its 40% more flow, but i'm not sure on flow difference for mp10s

I run a single MP10 on both of my 40B's, and have plenty of flow with them at 50% "lagoon mode", although I do not keep any SPS and have rather open rockwork. I do however have a S. gigantea anemone in the one, and it has been "content" for over a year - healthy and not moving.

I run a pair of Tunze Nanostream 6025's (740 gph each) on my 50g "cube", with copious rockwork and lots of gorgonians that appreciate high flow rates, and they seem to fit just right.

I would think that a single MP10 would be sufficient for a 34g unless you desire or require copious amounts of flow.

So an mp10 wireless on each end of the display... I'm thinking anti-sync reefcrest at 40-50%...

Sounds solid?

Yup, and maybe not restricted to the sides of the aquarium - can try to place them in the back corners on the back wall maybe...

I am going to try to not spend a crap ton if money on tank flow this time around. Vortech on the sides, cord wise is an eyesore, my old ones did not last long until they made noise, and the premium price is hardly worth it to me personally.

So a couple of nice pumps in the back corners, possibly a gyre upon more research, and etc.. to see if I can bring the price down compared to 2 to 4 vortechs.

I will admit tho, two mp40s on the back wall is pretty sweet but dang expensive.

Clever rock work will be a key to maximizing the flow of chosen pumps is my plan as well.

To answer your question tho, adding another mp10qd does seem reasonable since you already have one.

If it was a money thing id buy one used on the forums for $150, but then id be losing sleep over what if its whiny or noisy or something happens and it breaks down right away....

The new one would atleast carry some security....
