to get onyx clowns, would you do this?

I believe Great Bay Aquarium has a pair in their display tank, they look like the ones at LiveAquaria.com except they have developed their full jet black color and the only part that is orange is the head/face. I've been there a few times just to look at them and they look like a pair, one larger than the other and both swim together and cuddle the same Rose Anemone. I asked them if it was for sale, the first few times, they didn't want to sell it but I told them I really liked them and they said it will be hard to catch from their display tank without at least partially taking it down. They quoted $200 for the pair. I already have a pair of True Percs for 5 years, otherwise, I would definitely consider it.

klam, 4 clowns in a 10 gallon tank!!! man! thats way too much. plus you shouldnt put more than a pair per tank unless you have a really large tank like 150 gallon +.
i would suggest you only keep one pair in your tank put the third one in some other tank.

and yea pics plz:)

snabss: i have already move them to larger tanks and they are doing well. the 10 gallon was just a quartine tank for 1 week. they are in 100 gallon reef now.

i have pic but now too clear i will try to post easier for me to e-mail ya and you can help me post. don't really have time to learn to post still new.

montanabay: pm'd you.
i can send pic to your e-mail but i wouldn't know how to post. if you want i can send you the pic and you could post for me.

or anyone give me step by step instruction and when i find the time i could learn but not anytime soon. sorry guys.

pm me if you are interested in pic.

if you are wondering about the health of the clowns they are healthy and fat. i have 2 gbta and 2 rbta. 2gbta is about 10+inches fully expand and one rose is about 12 inches and the other is about 8 in. rbta orginially for robin. you know his quality. thanks robin.

oh by the way i put my 4 rod clown in a 10 gallon tank because it was about 3/4 in babies without 3rd strip yet and if you know breeder they have many in a 10 gallon tank so in there for a week should not have been a problem.

oh by the way. i bought 2 pair from rod: a pair of onyx and a pair of misbar onyx. like orion's

Update:

I found a few local, have them on hold right now. Once I get them home I will post the details. Let me know what you think, these are WC that came in with a bunch of typical percs and the store owner contacted me when they came in. Pretty nice colors for WC and about 1" in size.

i think i may be confused, what exactly is an Onyx Clown? i thought they were the full jet black colored clowns but seems like i was mistaken.

From my understanding, it's the amount of black in the stripes (black outlines bleeding together to form 1 black line against the white line).

they are a color morph of true percs. The onyx scales from just black where normally it is orange to black everywhere (including fins) that normally would be orange and the white areas stay the same. It often takes more then a year for the full color to fill in and one never knows how "onyx" they will become.

the pair is about a 1-2 not for sure. but the rod's one i got in mid jan for my b-day. so i don't know how old til rod sell it. but if you look closely the rod one 3rd strip hasn't shown yet and it is very blk. the last clown is a true but it is in the very back of the pic. he is the only clown with all 3 strip but not onyx.

was thinking of selling my pair but not sure yet. talking to robin to see when they mate i can work out a deal with him to take care of so the bay area wouldn't have to pay all the shipping to get onyx hopefully.

josh: i had a couple of really nice WC before and they are harder to keep than i expected. everyone said that clown are hardy fishes and they are but with the WC i had. i had no luck with it. also if you do purchase from store it is hard to say because the best would be taken up on the day of arrival and be transfer from tank to tank within hours and stresses them out. if you wait the good ones might be gone. so you could take your chances true perc runs about $25 here so after losing 3. that is why i decided to by from rod.

my first pair of WC didn't eat from day 1 and i tried garlic. live food, brine, mysis frozen, everything just to watch it die from stavation.

next clown. did the same thing

3rd clown ate after a day but this was a jumper. i had him in a 24 gallon nano cube. you know the jbj one with no hole to jump from so he jump into my overflow. found him there with in a hr. next he jump into the filter in the back. got him out too. probably been there for 1 night. hard to get him in such a tight place lucky he didn't jump on to the sponge. so he got stress from me trying to catch but recovered. then after a week that i got him and was sure this one will make it. he jump onto my overflow while i was at work didn't see it til i got home and it was dead. sad the clr was bright red orange unlike any other clown i seen.

there was a couple more but most died of stavation.

incase everyone is wondering. i alway use a hospital tank or a quaritine tank where water is taken from my other running tank so all parameter would be good, and i acc my fishes for about 1 hr before putting them in the tank.

sorry to say but WC was alot harder for me. sad when they don't eat from day 1.

thanks for the advice klam,

The LFS knew I was looking for these fish before they got them, he then notified me that three of the fish in the shipment showed nice onyx coloration. I went into the store and picked the two best out three and asked if they would hold them for a week to make sure they are eating and healthy. I also just set up a 10gal QT tank to house them until I feel comfortable putting them in my main tank. Fringerwrinkles gave me the whole DL and I've weighted the pros/cons over and over on TB, WC, LFS vs. Shipped, etc etc...haha. Hopefully I'm doing it right!

Cheers,

Josh

hey good luck with your purchase josh, let me know how it goes. the pics look great. they are great looking percula morphs. i think in onyx the dorsal is black as well, but then what do i know :) i dont own either the percula or the onyx or any clown for that matter :)

i hope you have better luck than i did. but they do look really nice. glad the shop owner is willing to hold it for you. not much store would do that especially with item like this. hope you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

haha, don't worry, I'll give the scoop on the whole shootin' match and a review of the LFS when they get home and all is said'n done.

Cheers,

Josh
