To Glue or Not to Glue (Re Reef Octopus), That is the Question....

I'm talking about the pipe components of Reef Octopus external skimmer. Outlet pipe is composed of several segments, and inlet barb fits into a collar that gets screwed onto the inlet port. The parts seem to fit together snugly by friction, although a metric to standard English adapter that I intend to use (for standard English on the outlet pipe, to extend its reach) isn't as snug.

Anyone using one of these with the various parts unglued, and having the unit NOT leak?

Thanks!

I have not seen the specific skimmer you have but...

Any unglued slip fit in any spot where a leak could cause damage is an accident waiting to happen..

Any skimmer where slip fittings are used and those cannot be glued as that would prevent future maintenance is a skimmer I immediately return.. ;)

I used stretch and seal tape around slip fittings on my AquaMaxx HOB skimmer for several years as a leak preventative. Meant I could still take the parts apart if I needed to.

You have to glue it or other wise will leak. U can add onions for easy disassembly or if u dont wont to glue use flexible pvc fittings.

if it is external, i would glue it. otherwise it will probably function just fine for about 6 months, and bust open approximately 35 seconds after you leave for a two week vacation.

i don't glue the outlet pipes on my skimmer that sits in my sump. if they shake loose it's low cost. but anything outside of the normal water holding gets fastened in some manner.
