To save a gig.

So I was at the lfs and saw they had a "yellow" err I mean bleached green gig. It's mouth was open, stubby tents, balding, and laying kinda flat. I know them of course and they asked if I thought I could save it. I'm not sure if I can but 8.71 was to cheap to turn down. Besides I figured it's time for me to try a cipro treatment. I bought the gig then immediately ordered cipro. Which brings me to my first problem. I can't get it here quicker than Tuesday. And it's not looking hot. So I have a couple thoughts. First is this, I have a 46 bowfront that I recently rehabbed a haddoni successfully that was in the same condition. And is still in the tank. Would the haddoni be at risk if I put the gig in the same tank for a couple days. My hope is the stable tank may help slow down the spiral for a couple days till the cipro gets in. I know gigs spread amongst eachother I just wasn't sure about haddoni and gigs. If not that I had an idea to do a dip before placing in either the dt or ht. And then using iodine which I have. I have heard anecdotal evidence of this helping. I also have erythromycin tabs I could use. And I have another antibiotic that could work also. Would it be worth a try or should I wait till the cipro gets here. I thought I had a plan until I found out how long it would take to get the cipro:-/ anyway those are my thoughts. I'm open to suggestions.
 
Hi, I can't really comment on your other treatmen protocal. But I Do Know that what ever these nems are carrying, will spread to the other nems.

I have 7 haddoni in my tank, and I to thought that I could get away with not treating a new nem. Well quess what, all my nems came down with the creeping crude. Ended up treat all of them. I will never put a carpet nem that has not been treated in my tank again.

Thanks Daniel I ended up doing a double dose of reef dip, by seachem,on the nem. I dipped it for 10 minutes. Then placed it in the 10 gallon hospital tank. I put a 150w mh on top and 270 gph of indirect flow with a sponge. And of course a heater. I have a rock in there for it to attach to. and it's gonna sit in there till it's healthy. It looked pretty bad after the dip but I have 4 days till cipro time. I'll be hunting some down tomorrow at my club meeting tomorrow. I'm really tempted to experiment with the erythromycin tabs
 
Look up the similarities between the two drugs and that should answer ur ? about using the other antibiotic. just a thought. good luck keep us posted.
 
Yep that's my plan tonight. And to add insult to injury, the lfs I've been asking to find a blue carpet. Had a healthy one this morning and before I could show up the fish manager took it home:headwally: Kinda made me upset a bit. :uzi: so i got this guy. But off to research some stuff.

Yep but the Aquatics manager says he's gonna try to persuade the guy to sell it to me. He is putting it in with a miniatis grouper.... Ya that oughta work:P
 
If you have a relationship with a local veterinarian ask him/her to cut you a script for the cipro and you can fill it at any pharmacy.

The gig looks better but now it's not attached and is pirouetting around the hospital tank. It's inflated but gaping mouth. Hurry up cipro
 
where are you located? If your'e around Chicago I can gave you some.. otherwise might be someone in your area that has cipro.
 
I'm north of Seattle. I put the word out to many of the reefers in the area. But no one yet. The funny thing is it's being sent from Washington but its closed weekends so I couldn't just show up and get it. It hit the mail yesterday so maybe I'll luck out a bit. Even if the gig doesn't make it at least I'll have 50 tabs of cipro on hand. Which I can't believe I didn't have some already considering I now have 7 different carpets.

Here is a pic from last night. The mouth is closed more than that usually. But as you can see it's not doing well.

I wish I know what store had that in I would have picked it up and tried to save it to. I guess I need to start hitting up the local shops.
 
Well it don't look good. It's stomach is out. By morning I expect I will be cleaning out the hospital tank in the morning. It's pancaked an mouth, and stomach are out. I suggest if you want to save a gig have cipro on hand. Now I will but it won't help this one
 
Sorry to hear, keep the faith, and cipro immediately if the Gig is still alive. It probably stood a better chance with you that at petco anyways. Sadly, when they are sick, it's just a matter of time.
 
Thanx. I'm cleaning out the hospital tank as we speak. My plan was to treat it but it was pretty bad off when I decided to try and save it. And I was hopeful that a place a couple hrs away would be able to get me the meds. But now if I ever get a sick carpet I'm armed to the teeth:)
 
Definately having some Cipro on hand if you keep these tougher nems ought to be standard practice. You will be good for next time.
