Thanks John for the info. When I ordered him I was hoping for a 2 or 3 in but I got this large 4in (6in with tail). Now I need to hopefully keep him alive. Any suggestions, I wish I had had the qt tank but my first 2 attempts I just ran into problems. I am now getting a 30g tank that will be tied into my main system and will use it. Problem is a probably could not catch the regal.

What do you think of Blue Face angels from Malaysia? I believe they are more orange than yellow correct? I am just not sure how healthy they are?

You are my Icon, always have been. I came to a realization a few months ago about Centropyge coral predation. They go after injured, sick, or stressed corals (except, unfortunately, Trachy's which still =Angel Crack).
I'm working on my 2nd Reef now (as you may know or not), with my old C. bicolor in it. I never saw that angel peck at anything that wasn't already in dire straits.
Your systems are truly inspirational to us rookies!
And Regals are *THE* Angel, as far as I'm concerned!

Matt thanks buddy! I'm humbled... I've idolized so many people in this hobby since I was a child and continue to... there are so many great people... and this is one heck of a hobby... it takes the mastery of so many skills... whatever bug I've had since I was a young child... I remember memorizing latin names of angels when I was 10 or 11... for no other reason that an inexplicable innate passion... I've always been drawn to the water... I grew up on an island on a lake so perhaps it was natural... to this day I cannot find a pool of water, be it fresh or salt, without looking deeply into it and scanning it for life... passions are a funny thing are one of the many reasons our species have had so much success... every advance in history has resulted from a person with a passion when you think about it...

Looks like a big bloody lot of fun mate, not bad visibility for 100 feet either! Especially like the Octopus... tricky suckers they are occasionally see them come a fair way into the estuaries around these parts, certainly interesting to tangle with when you're taking a nice afternoon dip. If you're ever over this side of the big blue, give us a yell - I'm sure the local aquarium society I'm secretary for would have more than enough contacts to get one such as yourself a pretty good dive in the untouched parts of the GBRMP!

I hope you made it through the cyclone okay, although perhaps that was north of you no? One of the great things about my years of studying fish is my knowledge of geography that has resulted... including understanding your great country... you're a lucky man, you have exponentially more angelfish species in Australia than our country has!

fantastic tanks!

i like the one with the marginalis the most. it's one of my favourite fishes and the tank it's kept in is gorgeous. the bellae flasher is gorgeous too.

i'm envious of your spawning colini pair. i've tried this species a few times but they always eat in QT and then just die for no reason. but they all come out from philippines so probably had something to do with collection. I'll try the fijian ones again if they ever come again.

copps i hope you don't mind me asking. i've read somewhere in one of the books, i think it's kiyoshi endoh's, about centropyge having two separate subgenus. centropyge, and xiphypops. one of the subgenus is said to eat corals and the other, seldom. i think it has something to do with the mouth. but i cannot find anymore information about it. do you know?

Lemon (your real name is...?) Centropyge is actually broken up into three subgenera, including Paracentropyge, Centropyge, and Xiphypops... Xiphypops are clearly the most "reef safe"... I do an entire one hour talk on Centropyge and break down this genus... their taxonomy falls in line with their "reefsafeness"... the vast majority of species are in the Centropyge subgenus, and this is broken down into a number of complexes... some much more reefsafe than others...

The two species in the Xiphypops subgenus that are furthest apart both geographically and genetically are Centropyge fisheri and Centropyge resplendens... Frank Baensch spawned these two species together and raised the young... the F1 generation was sexually viable... just amazing... and one of the reasons Frank did this combo... many people asked "why'd he dirty up the resplendens?", but his reasons were beyond glamour... I appreciated his efforts so much the pair retired in my basement... the fisheri Mommy is in my totm as you see... here was the pair...

I was Coppolino... and Copps for short... it's stuck so much many people think my name is John Copps! I could see my Sicilian grandparents rolling over in their graves...

your angels and reef are truely inspirational!
DO you have a recomended mininal tank size for sharing a regal and majestic angel? Both specimens would be aprrox 2-2.5', i have kept a regal before and absilutely love them but have recently aquired a soft spot for the majestic also. :inlove:

Also the regal i had did not touch any coral including SPS, euphyllia, scolly, acan and zoos, i was also feeding twice daily during the week and 3 times on weekends when home. I think this has a lot to do with fish eating coral...hunger.

After reading thru most of this thread i must admit i learnt the hard way using QT (and lost 2 regals) and agree 100% with the QT process when done correctly. I think incorrect QT kills more fish than anything, where someone will just fill a tank and chuck the fish straight in and expet success and then blame the QT process for not working.

Don't tell me that John, I'll break my fingers booking tickets too quickly! :lmao: thankfully the cyclone was about 1000km north of here (Brisbane), though where it did hit caused more than enough damage - all we got down here was some major gusts, some high seas, and a few storms. So soon after the flooding it's left the state pretty crippled. The joys of living were we do! Trade-off for all our natural splendour I guess?

Speaking of our Angels... a collector mate was recently telling me of a mixing zone he found off the coast in the Coral Sea, full of untold hybrids and aberrants of various species of Angels. Reckons the types of things in this region are unlike anywhere else he knows of... if I can ply more info out of him I'll have to send you some as it seems it's probably right up your alley as for coming Down Under, check your inbox mate...

Hi John, I was hoping you would share, tips or tricks you have in introducing angels to one another.

I have a regal that I have had for almost a year in a 300g, she is boss of the tank even with other tangs. Today I am picking up 2 more regals who are eating at the lfs and will be putting them in my divided 110g QT tank. Any advice?

John I was re-reading your TOTM thread again right now and I had a question. On my 300 gallon Angelfish/SPS reef, I've got a AquaUV 57 Watt UV sterilizer as you do on your tank. I noticed you said you run it in your closed loop pushed by an ATB airstar 1800. Do you have the flow out of the atb split or is it the full 1800 gph running through your UV.

The reason I ask is i thought a lower flow would have a better chance to control ich???

I have my UV running off a manifold I build off my Reeflo Dart. The line that has the UV in it then runs to my frag tank but I dont get much flow out of it. Maybe 6-7 gph. I also have a pump feeding my 1/2 horse chiller that is rated around 1400 gph that I am now thinking I should plumb my UV into...

After speaking with you in Stockton late last year I fallowed my tank for 8 weeks and treated all my fish w/ 5 weeks of cupramine due to a few ich spots poping up. well about a week after reintroducing the fish into the display ich popped back up. SO im not sure what went wrong but im not doing that again so I want ot find a better way to control the ich. The fish arn't stressed, are fat, and act normal, I just dont like to look at it. Do you have any advice on sizing the UV? The system has about 375 gallons or so...
