Toadstool coral not opening after almost a week

It looks like my toadstool coral is shedding some slime, and I have used a syringe to blow off the accumulated slime on it. Once the old slime is removed, it looks shiny, but still won't open! Any reasons for that? My nitrates and phosphates are absolutely 0 and mg, ca, alk and pH are perfect.

Reading through some of the earlier posts, I gather that high flow could be what is required to continually wash off the slime and allow the polyps to extend, but are there any keepers of toadstools in low to medium flow who encounter no problems with polyp extension?

Toadstool corals can be kind of temperamental sometimes. Assuming your parameters are within reason and the lighting is sufficient, I would just give it some more time.

+1 toadstools can be very moody. It may also be shedding, every once in a while they will shed a waxy coat off, this helps to remove algae and other growth.

toadstools are very moody, at least once a month mine closes up, its still kinda small but I'm almost positive its a female

I sure hope mine is a female too! Makes for an impressive specimen. Any idea on their growth rates?

Bought my green polyp toadstool at 2".............. its 26 mths now and it has reached just over 14" when expanded. Sometimes when it sheds it closes for nearly 2wks now.

Awesome tank you have there, must cost you a fortune to maintain!

Mine likes indirect flow (right below the wavemaker) and strangely enough it prefers low salinity of around 1.022

Thanks......... My tank is actually up about 29 mths and my salinity has constantly been maintained at 1.025-26. I am running 12 (39W) HO T5 bulbs and Tru-lumen strips. (blue) My corals love it. I also have been running biopellets about 24mths now. I don't even spot feed my corals. I do use up a lot of B-Ionic daily though. 96mls daily. That maintains my Alk @ 9.2-9.5 and my cal is over 500. The B-Ionic is the most expensive. I do a 50 gal water change mthly. So technically no............not really that much. It practically runs on its own now.....LOL

my devils hand leahter has been closed for about 3 months now...kinda ticking me off, as its white polyps were very nice to see...i have cut back my duncan colony though, i think that is the problem...as it has been closed since i added the duncan.

Toadstools will shed their outer skin from time to time also. Will not polyp out, then the outer skin gets a little shinny and will shed. Its normal for them to also do this when you first introduce them to a tank.
