Toadstool problems

Hey guys,

First I'd just like to say hello as Im new to the forum (couldn't find an intro thread).

2 weeks ago I purchased a toadstool leather, and i've had problems with it since.

It has yet to open its polyps (i understand they can sulk for a while)

It began shedding within 2 days of entering the tank, and then it closed its caps like a fist and has refused to open, it seems to grow away from the light, my lighting is what is required for it, and the coral is high up in the tank. There is some tissue die off on one of the caps, any ideas what could be causing this?

My water params are at the correct levels (including trace elements).
Nitrates are quite high, water changes and skimming are slowly brining this down.

Any tips/help/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Jack.

What are your parameters all listed out? If you have high nitrates, you shouldn't be adding corals. You also say your lighting is what is required, but what kind of lighting, how intense(wattage), how long(photoperiod), and how far off the water surface is the fixture? Maybe it's getting too much light, too fast.

Things we need to know.
Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate:
Alkalinity, day and night:
pH:
Calcium:
Magnesium:
Salinity:
Temperature, day and night:
Lighting specs:
What testing kits and equipment:

You mentioned trace elements being at the right levels. What trace elements and how are you testing them? As a rule, don't dose it unless you can test for it.

Not trying to sound mean, just need some more info to help out.

As long as ur water quality tests good and u other corals are doing fine give it some time. Leathers when stressed/growing will not be happy looking/ fully extnded.

How high is "quite high?" I agree with jseymour that you shouldn't be adding corals until you get them under control. I bought a toadstool from liveaquaria 3 days ago and within 24 hours of being in the tank it was completely opened and extended. I have it placed directly under a 250w mh about 14 inches deep in the water with low flow. My ammonia and nitrites are zero and nitrates are 10-20ppm. Have you tried placing it in other areas of the tank with different light/flow parameters?

I would start it on a lower level in your tank with moderate flow and see how that does .Plus a couple of water changes to get those trites down.
