i've had this for about 2 months and it has done well up until now. this is what it normally looks like...

i did some rearranging over the weekend and moved it from the sand bed about half way up. it's getting more flow. also, i have a mesh screen over the top glass so the lighting will be subdued until everything is acclimated. this is a 29g cube with MH lighting. just tested the water...ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 5. everything else within normal ranges.

i've been reading about "shedding" but i don't have any idea if this is what is happening or if it's very unhappy with its new location. it has looked like this since saturday...

is it a goner or is there something else i can do? hate to lose it!!

I can't tell if it's shedding or not. It doesn't look happy, though. Maybe try moving it back to where it was? Seems awfully cramped where it is now.

sorry to say but it looks dead, IMO. try and feel it and see if it disintegrates or sheds anything off and that should help determine if its still alive

looks fine to me...my leathers close up all the time like that...sometime for weeks, then all of a sudden bigger and beautiful

The top doesn't look horrible. The base though looks like it broke. Was it like that before or was that new from the move? Looks in the picture like the base may have snapped from being pushed against the white rock behind it. If that is so, then it should be able to recover. If it is an old break, it should still be able to recover. As long as any rot doesn't spread you should be fine. I have one that completely rebuilt its base on its own (wasn't damaged, but the direction it was facing changed so I guess it decided to move things around) when I moved it.

Looks like the stalk is open like it has a "wound" or something? Is something maybe eating at the backside of the stalk? Hard to tell from the picture.

Yes, fully agree. Leathers can close up for long periods of time, build up a nasty looking, algae covered skin, then shed and look great again. It does look cramped, so maybe a move is a good idea, but unless you see disintegration of the body, I'd not worry too much. Also, never hurts to check your water parameters, just in case.

thanks, guys. i put him back on the sand bed.

his stalk has pretty much always looks like that. he is not disintegrating at all, the crown is firm to a light touch. polyps are beginning to come back out so i'm gonna give it a while longer to see how he does.

water params all good. :)
