I'm going to tag along, I just bought my first toadstool and seems upset and isn't showing it's polyps either.

Mine has never gone more than a couple days without polyp extension then sheds mucous layer and seems to have thicker, longer extension. Mrs, I'm not sure what is going on with yours. Has it lost color? Do you have any perching fish that may be aggravating it? My green clown goby and algae blenny take turns lounging in mine and if they're there long enough or flop around too much, the polyps will detract. Just some thoughts...

mrsmav,
polyp retraction in toadstools is normal, and in my case almost an everyday cyclical occurrence (day vs. night). My observations on a two-year old Sarcopyton is as follows:

1. Moderate but random (back and forth) flow will promote PE;
2. Phosphate removers especially products like RowaPhos will cause polyp retraction - often for days on end (personal observation);
3. My female Percula hosts in a larger Sarcophyton but that doesn't cause any less of the PE;
4. If it's a mixed reef (soft corals, LPS and SPS corals) then running carbon is almost mandatory;

We'll need a bit more info on your lighting and toad's position in your tank.

I'm having the similar problem with my green toadstool.

It polyps all the time though, but the green color is just not there. I received the frag about a month ago.

Should I be worried or should I relax and realize this is normal?

thanks for the info argo, but i have had this sarco for a year and a half and the polyps not extending has been going on for two months. my lighting is 1 250 watt mh, with 2 92watt acinic/10000k daylight. the location of my toadstool is off to the right of my tank.
thanks

mrsmav, a few questions for you:

1. what's the tank's volume;
2. what's used for water flow;
3. does your Sarco frag/colony stretch towards the light when your lights are on or looks limp most of the time;
4. where is it positioned vertically (top / middle / down);
5. did you get it as a frag and tried attaching it to your live rock or was it already attached to a small piece or rubble.

hey argo, it is not a frag, it came attached to a piece of rubble which i glued to a rock. my tanks volume is 92 g. i have a power
sweep model 228 270gph and a aquaclear quick filter that allows for extra circulation.
my toadstool has been acting normal for the most part. it does stretch towards the light and other times it shrinks up.
it is also positioned towards top
thanks
