Tomatoe/Ocellaris breeding!

Excellent thread people! I'm going to be following this one for sure.. Seems like history in the making...

I havent successfully brought my fry up yet (getting food cultures going this week for the next batch hopefully), but I think that the babies look more red then what I've seen for other ocellaris babies.. I'm no expert on clown babies, so it may just be my interpretation..

Either way, its WAY cool that you've managed to get them this far, and I look forward to more updates..

Ill get some new pics up in the next few days along with my fry rearing system that i finally finished. It consists of 7 tanks and a sump. Filtration will be live rock that im getting this weekend i think. Also i will be using a filter sock every couple of days to get the detrius out along with siphoning. My plans are for 3 tanks for my seahorse fry and 4 for the clowns. Ill probably have to expand later on but this is a good start :)

This whole incident is very interesting. The whole taxonomy of clownfish is on somewhat shaky ground anyway, suffering from antiquated classification. Your interbreeding of clowns definitely suggest that there may be many less "true" species than previously suspected. I have heard of this before, but I wonder if there have been similar instances in Premnas? Either way, I look forward to seeing some changes in the Amphiprioninae-such as more subspecies. BTW, congrats :)

k_kagy: that is what I suspect in most cases. Unfortunately, it is not official in the classification world as of yet. There are a lot of cases such as this, such as the frequent encounters of Holocanthus ciliaris x H. bermudenis hybrids. Still havent changed them yet either.

All are the same species...but different subspecies.
At the moment they are not the same species and in my experience they breed true to a level which indicates they are separate species.

There certainly are some hybrids in the clown world, but unless there is a reclassification, this pair is presumed to be:

Family: Pomacentridae
Genus: Amphiprion

Presumed species in this case:
frenatus and ocellaris
