Tomatoe/Ocellaris breeding!

theres alot of misbars. Most have only 2 stripes and a few have 3. Or parts of either. I missed my last hatch as i totally forgot the night of the hatch and i have new eggs due to hatch on the 26th :) Ive been so busy and preoccupied with other stuff its cost me alot of casualties on the younger fry.

The main reason I do not like these is: some day in the future collecting wild clowns may be illegal, if so, then captive bred will be all that we have. Assuming these creatures get out into the general reefing community some of them will end up at a pet store. Somebody will breed them and have too many, or somebody will leave the hobby. Then somebody else will buy them and not know they are hybrids, breed them and sell them as pure bred fish. Where this end up is 30 maybe 50 years from now, not having separate species available. Only having one generic clown available that is a mixed up version of all clowns. If you don't believe it, just check out what the Flowerhorn hybrid cichlid has done to the Trimac in only about 10 years.

That is true, but I would suspect a strong genetic bloodline. No imbreeding if that's the case. Just my quick thought. Its not well thought through either

uhm i dont know bout you but i think there will be enough professional retailers and breeders that can keep the clowns species in line but i agree that there maybe be some confusion at one point

Great thread!! I like the rack system. I'd love to raise some, if mine ever start - I've only had them for a couple months
Nice going, we have several fellow reefers who have raised fry - all sorts.
It's really neat to see a tank full of clown fish

Just can't help myself. I'm finally doing a salt-water tank for my youngest son so he can have a "Nemo". I always thought saltwater people were advanced, intellectual, and of course had more money to blow than freshwater geeks. Heck, there's even a section called Responsible Reefkeeping. As in history, man obviously doesn't learn from past mistakes once again. Some pretty "so-called" intellectuals introduced the Nile perch into Lake Victoria creating the single largest number of species to be made extinct by one cause/event (includes Dinosaurs). I did see a few replies with "ethical thought". I have zero experience with saltwater, but have had up to over 200 tanks of fresh for quite a number of years. It only takes a few unscrupulous individuals, and an uneducated market for things to go bad in just a few years. That is FACT not opinion in the freshwater market especially with cichlids. Many freshwater forums have the hybrid thread come up on a regular basis. The result is usually one of two things. Things get ugly and the topic is locked, or the pro-hybrid person is educated by veteran members of the hobby. I'm not looking at starting some little thread-war. I'm just amazed out how many postings on how "cool" this is. Hybridization may not be a current problem in the saltwater community, but if these (or any other) hybrids would start to "sell like hotcakes" then it probably would be. Unfortunately, no matter how many posts are done like mine, there will always be a Dr. Clownenstein out there creating hybrids and trying to sell them. They can have no claims to being responsible breeders. If this makes one person, think twice about hybridization then it was worth the time it took to type it. I've been reading many highly intelligent threads on this site and learning very helpful knowledge until I came across this thread. If there are pro-hybrid replies, at least keep them civil, adult-like, perhaps even scientific since discussions on this topic can only promote and advance the hobby.

Freshwaterguy,

[welcome]

I find it interesting that of all the topics you've read on RC, this is the one you reply to. Not that there is anything wrong with that, and you stated your case eloquently.

My signature used to read "Proper planning and education are the keys to success" when I was a moderator on another site (much smaller) a few years ago. Most of the questions that I would have posted as topics have been answered by reading many of the informative threads here. I obviously have no Saltwater experience to share. It's always better to research a topic before one writes a doctoral thesis on it. I did have some general knowledge on aquarium hybrids that I thought would possibly be useful in that thread. I probably should have started a thread in Responsible Reefkeeping to see what those with saltwater experience think on the subject.

You seem to have the right approach. Since your child is a fan of Nemo, you might want to just peruse this brief overview.

[nemo]

Hope it helps get you guys into your first saltwater tank. :)

Well ive pretty much stayed out of the whole arguement. Bottom line. My fish chose to do this. I think its pretty cool and will raise the fry to the best of my knowledge. I do respect your opinion as there are many cases of hybridization that have caused chaos. I dont want to see this thread get closed or get into a big debate over this. Ive said my peace and thats all im going to say. I have a demand for these and will be selling them when im ready. If people view me as irresponsible then so be it. Merry Christmas :)

melev: nice page and is there a place where other pages similar listed.
I see from the link that is just under http://www.reefenctral.com/ and there is not other directory to open between.

What directory / URL were you trying to open? Perhaps there are broken links on that page.

My seahorse tank is a 30 cube with macro and live rock. Its plumbed into my reef and i have softies in it as well. I have a pair of oscellaris in there and now only one horse as the male got sick and died :( Id say you can do it but just watch and make sure the fish dont outcompete the horses for food.

ok/ iw asthinking about hand feeding the horses so they got enough food. i hand feed the jawfish and clowns so t wouldn be extra wrok for since im already in the tank. ill se what i can come up with and ill post pics if i decide to do it

Set up a feeding station for your seahorses. Here is a page with several feeding station alternatives....
