Toms 200g + system build

This will be a sloooow build and fully documented. A little background. I currently have a 93 cube which is about a year old. This was stocked from my 75 which I broke down when my wife and I moved a piano into the home and the only place it could go was where the 75 was sitting. This tank had been up for about 4 years and was doing pretty well.

When we moved into our home 5 years ago we knew that eventually we would out grow the existing space. However, we had plenty of space to build out and the neighborhood was great. About six months ago we decided to take the plunge and move forward with exploring the idea of of the addition. We met with multiple contractors and made the decision to move forward and enlisted the services of an architect. The plan was to put about 800 sq/ft on the back of the existing ranch to include an additional living space, bedroom, bathroom, laundry room and, you guessed it, a fish room.

After a long wait for permit approval from my town we finally begun work this week. My deck has been demoed and the mason will start the foundation tomorrow. Work should be completed by early December worst case.

The new tank will sit in the new living space with the dedicated fish room directly behind it. The current plan is to have at least a 180g display supported by a 100g rubbermade sump and separate fuge. After running biopellets for several years I recently went back to algae and rock in my sump and my tank has exploded with micro fauna and looks so much healthier. For this reason I plan to stick to more "traditional" filtration methods on the new system. Lots of rock in the sump and algae packed fuge.

The fish room will be 8x5 so there will be plenty of room to set up a separate QT and frag tang system down the road.

I plan to light the tank with a combo of LEDs and t5. This is something Iv been doing on my current tank for about 6 months and am very happy with the results. Flow will be provided with several maxspect gyres and mp40. I like to have several different sources of flow to keep things nice and chaotic. Stocking will be fairly heavy and as far as corals go it will be a good mixed reef.

As construction progresses, I'll keep the thread up to date. As soon as I can dig out the pdf from my email, I'll post a picture of the floor plan so you all have a better idea of what we are trying to achieve. Finally, a big kudos to my wife even entertaining a separate room dedicated to "fish stuff". While she is not as nuts about reefing as me she has always been supportive of my "problem"

Here's the floor plan. I'll also be getting the rubbermade set up in the garage over the next week or so so I can start cooking and cycling rock so that it will be ready to go once the space is ready. The nice thing about planning this out and moving slowly is that I'll be able to spread the cost.

So I now have a big pit in my back yard from the dig out today. Tried to sell the wife on scrapping the addition and just grabbing some pool liners and a few thousand gallons of salt water so we could start a 40' x 20' shallow sunlit reef. She didn't buy in. Lol.

Foundation is almost done. Framing, windows and roof starting next week.

Additional foundational support to ensure no future tank is to large!

Next up is obtaining the Rubbermaid stock Tanks and rock and to get cooking in the garage.

My sump plans are to have a 70 or 100 gal Rubbermaid as the sump. This will hold a large amount of rock as I'll be keeping the display nice and open.

I'll be using an external skimmer, carbon, and gfo (when necessary) for mechanical and chemical filtration. The return pump will feed all of the reactors etc. I'll be t-ing off of the return to feed a separate fuge/mangrove tank which will be 50g shallow Rubbermaid. Which will then drain back to the sump.

Framing starts next week. Weather in the area delayed pouring the rat slab last weekend so they will be doing that Friday. In the mean time I'm starting to plan out the fish room. Heres my initial plumbing plan.

Sweet. I always love builds that start from below the ground level!

Will you have access to this new crawl space from the old crawl space?

Yes, and it will be easier thank before. Prior to this I had to crawl under my deck to get to the existing space. Now the new entrance will be clear and the old entrance has had the door removed.

Why not put the tank in the wall if you are doing an addition anyways?

We thought about this long and hard. Ultimatly, we decided against it for several reasons.

Firstly, the fish room would have had to be enlarged. While this alone was not ever an issue, it created other problems. You'll notice on the plans how my fish room is staggered in. My property lines are not oriented parallel to the house and we would had had to get a variance for encroaching onto the existing set back. We could have gone this route but my town is notorious for taking 6 months to decline you. And because this thing needs to be usable by xmas, that was a no go.

Second, I'm always messing with my tank. Having to go in and out of the fish room to feed, place corals etc would drive me nuts.

Third, we are also contemplating having a peninsula style tank that would stick out into the room to divide the space up a bit.

So tank decision has been made. Good friend of mine was holding a custom tank and stand for a guy that had to relocate for work and decided to start fresh once he settled. The tank is 48x30x27 making it just shy of 170 gallons. It has an external coast to coast overflow on the 30 inch side so is designed as a peninsula. Originally I was set on a 6ft tank against the wall but after playing around with our furniture layout the 4ft peninsula will work way better.

OK. Tank is going to be here Saturday. In the mean time I'm amassing equipment. Skimmer, lighting and flow all crossed of the list. Getting a 40b for my fuge. Already have a frag tank.

At this point I'm trying to decide between dosing two part or moving to a calc reactor. Iv always used two part and am very comfortable with it. However iv been looking at getting a new doser and think with the upgrade itight be wise to make the move to a reactor. I figured my total water volume will be in excess of 250g and the cost of two part will end up overtaking the initial start up of a calc rector. Thoughts?

Here's where we are in the building process. This all went up yesterday after the open deck inspection.

Well. Things are moving very well. One we got past the initial slew of foundation inspections things have really taken off. Roofing and siding are all complete. HVAC was all installed today. Rough electrical and plumbing should be done by the end of the week. Then we have one last inspection and we can drywall, paint and floor. At least then i can get the fish room built out. The garage is starting to fill up with stuff for the new tank!

How much tank can that skimmer handle? I was suggested hat same skimmer for my 240 gallon tank with 22 fish in it.

Either way, progress is coming along great!!!!

It's a beast. Totally water volum is going to be 250+ when I'm done. I'll be stocking and feeding heavy. I know s few guys that have it on similarly sized systems and love it.
