a good friend of mine i recently visited down in brazil has a 550 gallon reef tank. but its not just any reef tank its a tang only reef tank and he has 47 tangs in there. it does not look crowded at all it actually looks quite empty but i dont think this is healthy to have this many large fish in this tank, what do you guys think?

ill have to see if i can have him email me some, it is a very nice tank the rockscaping looks so natural you wouldnt even believe it. he could take a pic of the tank and pass it off as a pic of a reef off the coast of austrailia. it looks that good.

I'm not really sure that I believe with 47 "large fish" in a tank, it can look empty... either he doesnt really have 47 tangs... or they are younger fish and arent up to full size... or his 550 gallon tank is actually larger than that.

A friend of mine here has a 650 gallon tank, it's aquascaped well and he has no where near 47 fish, more like 20-25, and it looks quite full.

I'd like to see pictures of this tank though :)

you are correct, id say only a good 10 percent of them are full grown, the majority of them are 2-10 inches long. this is why i am worried, it looks fine now but once all those tangs reach full size it will be packed.

with that many tangs.. the aggression will be spread out. probably works the best for them.. bioload will be off the charts

Serious what / how much / how often does he feed?

Water changes?

I bet it's awesome to watch though.

he has a ton of money as he owns his own software company. i believe he feeds once every 2 days, does a 30 percent water change twice a week, and he has a massive filtration system consisting of a skimmer thats almost 7 feet tall and a massive canister filter. along with a regugium he has in his back fish room that is 220 gallons.

the tank has been established for 6 years but he just recently(within the last year) has added a good 20 tangs to his stock. he has a ton of coral and i would hate to see it all perish in a tank crash.

I would agree. A 550 is not all that large.

I have over 60 fish in my 450g DT, ( only 9 tangs) but IMO. it doesn't look 'full'

Yes, but you have anthias and wrasse and goby in there... and other small fish.

This guy says he has 47 tangs, even a 3-4" tang looks a lot bigger than a 3-4" wrasse.

Anyway, you're comparing apples to oranges. If you had 47 of your sailfin tang in that tank, imagine the difference :)

Id hate to see what you consider a full tank. Your tank is beautiful but definitely looks full to me. Only 60 fish... Im planning on about 35 for my 600g.

You're right, but as posted, I was answering your post about your friends tank...not comparing apples to 47 tangs...
there is NO way, I'd ever put more that 45 tangs in my tank! :strange:

To me it looks full. However I like the natural look as found in the ocean as opposed to the packed to the gills look.
