Took fuge off line?

I took my fuge off line a few days ago. I was having problems with cotton candy algae and did not want it to move up to my tank again. I managed to kill it all of in the tank. So I shut off the light on the fuge and threw out the chaeto cause it had CCA growing in it. I left all the live mud and sand and rock in there. Has anyone else done this to there reef? I have alway had O no3 and contribute my fuge to that. What effects did you see from shutting down the fuge?

^ did or did not look as clear?? I have not decided to take it off line for good or to get new chaeto after CCA dies.

Just did water test. My Ph has dropped from 8.0-8.1 to 7.8 and for the first time ever my nitrates are 5ppm. Everything still looks good so I will see what happens. If no3 gets ant higher that I will for sure start up th fuge again. I need to kill off the CCa first though.

. I took mine offline for a week from a return pump leaking voltage. While I was waiting for my new pump it didn't cause any problems and frankly didn't make much of a difference. No rise in nitrates for me but I also noticed a change in my ph but not as drastic as yours. I did use a HOB filter with rubble from my fuge for the time it was offline but I doubt that made any difference. One thing I did make sure to do was making sure there was still flow in my fuge. I hooked up a powerhead on the return section and fed it through a 1/2" line back to the intake section just to make sure water wasn't stagnant.

My fuge is part of my sump so it always has the volume of the tank flowing right through it plus the return for my phos reactor.
