top alternative for jumping fish

how about using acrylic or gutter guard vertically around the tank. how high would it need to be?

i have a 10" glass center brace on my tank. what are the chances a fish will jump and land on the brace? do they usually jump near the edges or anywhere?

I have a 8" canopy I built all the way around, and covered the overflows with acrylic. It has been 5+ years without a jumper. I would assume that if it lands on the center, it will flop around until it hits the water.

Use 1/4" clear netting from brs, then attach it to a screen that you cut to fit your tank top. Takes about half and hour to make and will prevent fish from jumping out.

i looked into this, but my problem is that I have an oceans motion CL with 8 outlets coming in from the top. it is an in wall setup and is basically closed in on 3 sides, so it seemed easier to do a vertical barrier, and then wont be in the way when I need to work on the tank.

if i do need to go the clear netting route from BRS can several corners be used to go around the outlets from the OM?

Thanks

In the old days I lost two fish to the center glass brace and saved another one that I actually heard flopping around. I then tried an egg crate barrier that sat on the center glass but one fish managed to make it through the egg crate and it too became a potato chip. They dry out in a matter of minutes under the hot lights. Now I am using tight fitting, small mesh screens and still I have my fingers crossed.

As far as the center brace in your tank. You can always construct a triangle out of glass that slopes to either side of the brace. That way, if when a fish jumps, it will slide down back into the tank. Sounds good in theory, but light penetration could be a problem. But I think your best option is to make a mesh top and make cutouts for all your pipes

Steve-

About the egg crate-- Do you mean it won't work for fish small enough to fit through the holes?

Yes, if you have larger fish then the egg crate will be fine. You would be surprised at the pinpoint accuracy of some of these fish when they jump though. For larger fish you will also want to weight your top somehow as they can build up quite a bit of force when jumping and lift the lid.

egg crate really affects your PAR. i just recently got the netting from BRS and its pretty attractive looking.

Agreed. I recently went with the BRS mesh as well (previously glass tops). My PH is higher now (8.1-8.3 previously 7.8-8.2) as well.

sounds like the clear screen is the best way to go. mainly b/c of the center brace

i HATE the center brace. If the tank wasn't built in i would have changed it a long time ago
