top off and cut off

I wont have electrical power in the closet my ro/di will be in. I also want to keep it simple. I recall seeing toilet bowl floats being used for this but I just searched the DIY forum and didnt find anything.

I just want to put a float valve (not switch) into a salt bucket. What part(s) do I need?

I also need a float switch and would be willing to split shipping cost. Might need you guys to help me pick out the switch that will work best for my application though. Just let me know when and I will get whoever some money.

If you are looking for a decent float switch go to Graingers. They are used on condensate pumps for HVAC applications.
They are much better than what you can buy on line. That is what I use on my top off systems.

I do not need an electric switch, I will be useing gravity feed. I just need a float switch that turns the water on when the water level drops and off when it rises. It needs to be small enough to fit inside a 4"x4" compartment in my hob sump/refuge. Anyone know of such switch?

I too do not need an electrical switch. I've found what I need is a Kent float valve. If I havent thrown it away I have one somewhere with my other tank stuff in the shed.

imsqueak, if you do not mind could you post the size of the Kent float valve? The compartment I will put it in is small (4"x4") and I would like to know if it will fit before I order one. Thanks.

Mark, I think you are out of luck. I have searched the web for mini float valve and the shortest I've seen is over 6" long. I recall mine was longer than that.

Just a question,
Why not do a low voltage system if you don't have the space for the float valves?
You can fit many small power heads in a 4X4 space...

Thanks for checking Squeak! I do not need a power head in the sump area(4"x4") just a switch. I can put a power head under the stand in my top off container. I was hopeing to use a gravity feed system with a float valve in the sump of my hob and a 2.5 gallon container on top of a book shelf next to my tank. I may have to go with the power head in a container under the tank and a switch in the sump. I am still having a hard time spending 300.00 BUCKS on a top off system to pump a pint of water into my sump!!! Most of the topoff systems I have been recommended are pricey!! (litermeterIII, Tunze,..)

These are the ones I currently use...

They'll fit in a 4x4 space...

I'll probably be upgrading to an osmolator in my new tank though... Only because I'll be using a kalkreactor in tandum with it though... ;)

I am in the design process of my tank and was wondering if a modified toilet float valve(ballcock) could be used on a gravity feed top off. I was trying to get into the search page but the sever is too busy. I used google and found this thread. I'm sure there are other threads discussing this but I can't find them at this time.

I wanted to use a toilet float valve having cost as one of the major contributors. Last time I looked for one online they were around $8-$13. The Kents look nice but a little spendy at $65. The search just get more expensive after that.

Anyone modified one of these before?

The cheap $8 valves are plastic from an outside view. Would probably have to pull one apart to make sure there is no metal on the inside. I think I'll pick one up and tinker with it. :)
