Topic- OZONE do you need it?

I would go with the 50mg/hr unit to be safe. You don't want an overpowered unit that may put too much ozone into the tank. I think you will be just fine with the 50mg/hr unit for your system.

Now if you are planning to pump ozone into a 300+ tank then I would suggest more.
 
Do you plan to purchase the Red Sea unit with the built in ORP monitor? If so, I think that is a good way to go if you don't already have an ORP monitor.

I'm going with the unit without the ORP monitor and plan to plug it into my Neptune controller.
 
What do you guys know about the production of nitric acid by the ozone generators if you don't use an air drier?
I've seen this mentioned in several places, but I don't know how serious it is.
 
how much is a neptune controller? the orp controller is 80-100 bucks. I rather get the neptune to control everything for a few bucks more.

jeff are you talking about the side effects to humans? the smell which makes you sick?
 
No, not human side effects.
But from what I've seen, it can damage the generator.
I'm not sure if it can get into the aquarium water as well.

Although, most commercial ozone generators actually use oxygen and not air. (So perhaps the warning is actually for the ones that use oxygen?)
 
No, I think if you use pure oxygen then there is no nitric acid issue.
There is another thread here where it is mentioned.
I think it was Boomer (not Bomber) who talks about it.
Let me see if I can find it.
 
so those of you who got the redsea units (grayout, s10willy) how has your tanks improved? Do you see any difference it coral extension or water clarity?

Also I need to know how to dose ozone if my skimmer does not have an ozone port. can I just get a T valve and hook it to my venturi on my skimmer?
 
I planned on posting some pics soon. I've been running the redsea 100mg/hr unit for about a week. I'm also using a small air pump and the air dryer as well. It's all hooked up to my Neptune controller to regulate ORP levels.

So far, so good. The water clarity is unreal and the sps are starting to lighten up a bit. All nuisance algae seems to be melting away. My skimmer is not producing as much skimmate and what is does produce is a whitish color. I haven't had any issues with ozone leaching into the air. I run the unit at 100% 24/7 or until the controller turns it off.

ORP levels in the morning top at 400 (ozone cutoff) and dip to around 360 at night. My ORP levels were in the high 200's when I started dosing ozone.

I am injecting the ozone into a special port created by MRC. It's a beckett skimmer, so I'm not sure about the venturi skimmers. I assume you can T the inlet line as many others have done.

Thats great to hear. I am still deciding between the redsea unit or the enlay unit, I want to do my homework on brands before I buy. I am really looking forward to those results of using ozone

I have the enlay unit and I think the redsea path is a better one. The readsea is just made better IMO.

I have the Impact skimmer from sealife systems. IMO its very nice, just a pain to clean. Now, can I hook ozone straight on the venturi with a t valve? I think I am going to get the neptune controller to control orp and my ca reactor since the orp controller is 100 bucks anyways
 
where is a good place to buy a neptune controller? I am also looking at the aquatronica unit since it isn t much more and it has a touch LCD color display
 
Have you looked into the Lighthouse Controller? I know Rob was using one. I think he was happy with it. I liked it when I saw it. With the ability to control pH and ORP, it may be worth looking in to, especially at a fraction of the price of Neptune or Aquatronica. I went with Neptune for the temp controller, but if I were buying right now the decision would be different. I really like the web server feature on the Lighthouse unit.

I also used a T on my Sealife System's modified beckett skimmer... it seems to work great!
As far as ozone, I have the enaly and am completely satisfied with it. For about 1/4 the price of the red sea, even if it doesn't hold up you can go buy another one... I bought this same exact enaly unit (with air drier).
Only complaint is that the air drier is too small and the beads get saturated too fast.
I'm going to buy some silica beads and make my own drier using an old carbon container.
Other than that it works great, you definately can't beat the price.

Anybody else have any adverse affects on their soft corals?
Mine started shrivelling up a bit when I started.
I shut off the ozone for a week and they came back.

I'm using a Milwaukee controller and the ORP reading never got above 350, but without ozone it now gets down to 300.
I'm going to turn it back on but set the controller to 300 and slowly (over days) crank it up to see what happens.
