Torn Between Skimmers for New Build

I've started the build for my new 105gal rimless SPS tank, and I'm in the final stages of getting getting the last pieces of equipment on order. I'll be starting a build thread in the two weeks, once everything starts arriving at my door. The tank itself isn't due for another 3 weeks.

I've got lighting and everything else done, I'm just undecided on what size skimmer to get. I've been looking at the Alpha Cones and can't decide whether to get the 250 or the 300. The 300 is dual Red Dragon pumps, so I figured for the $170 price difference, why not have a back-up pump. I just don't want it to be too much, although it is possible to run it with just one pump. I currently run a Bubble King Mini 160 which does a good job, I mean it skims what it can but it just doesn't seem to keep up with the demands of the system.

My new system details are: 105g DT, 45 gal sump, 20 gal frag tank for an actual volume of roughly 120-130 gallons. I plan to continue what I am doing on my 90 gal, Microbacter7, vodka dosing, medium fish load and feeding. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

get the alpha 200 or the ATB 1050 your system is far too small for an alpha 300

i agree... if you want a vertex cone, go with the 170, or the 200...

Really? I was thinking that the 200 would be borderline with carbon dosing and that the 250 would be a better fit. From there, I figured heck, why not just go big with the 300.

Even with vodka dosing and heavy feeding the 300 would over skim?

I have a total of 150g water volume and I am using the 200. It is a great fit. I also have a huge fish load and feed a lot.

The alpha 200 is rated for a 300gal tank. That's more than double your total volume.

Even a 170 would suffice with moderate bioload and light/moderate feeding IMO...

But if you're going heavy on the fish, and heavy on the feeding, i'd go with a 200.

I would say the 300 is definitely overkill. I vote for the 200.

What tank did you pick? I just ordered mine yesterday from envision acrylics. I think the Alpha 200 would be a better choice for your system. It is my understanding that they are designed for a higher bio load than most skimmers.

My tank is a rimless starphire 48x24x21 being built by Miracles. I've used a bubble king mini now for about 6 months on a similar water volume (slightly less) and feel it is undersized quite a bit for a medium bioload and carbon dosing.
