Total Darkness

Just wanted to pass along an observation I have seen in my SPS.

About 2 weeks ago my moonlights stopped working and my corals have
been in total darkness at night. The growth has been amazing.
Everything is getting new branches and growing faster than before.

Now you need to tall us what you kept constant. For example.. did you change your carbon? New lights? New flow? Alk higher? etc....

Nothing else changed. Regular water changes every week.

The only change was total darkness

I find this interesting, thanks for posting.

I have been wondering myself if total darkness would be better as my "moonlights" are still pretty powerful so i've been thinking about the risk that the light sensitive livestock never feels like it gets a chance to actually "rest".

Question -- What moonlights were you using?

I did the exact same thing I switched my moonlights of because i was not viewing them when they were coming on and my growth is great.

12X 1 watt in a 48" light.

there are some arguments that SPS corals need their beauty rest so to say ...

I lowered my lighting period from 14 to 13hours, and SPS are doing better now!

like everything else in this hobby, I guess it has to do with balance.

but there are also arguments for moon lights !

Allmost, what lighting are you running for 13 hours daily (actinics, halides)? I run my actinics for 11 hours and my halides are only on for 6.5 hours a day. I also have recently kept my moonlights off. I have great color and growth. I noticed that with the moonlights off I get better polyp extension from all the sps.

I only run T5HO, 8 of them,

4 are on for 13 hours a day, 8 for about 12 hours,

still too much I'm sure, gonna decrease it slowly to at least an hour less

There have been threads discussing cutting photo periods down to 5 or 6 hours per day here.

You may want to look for them.

Those threads on RC are what me the idea to do this. I am down to 6.5 hours and my growth and colors have actually increased from what I was getting with running the lights for 12 hrs. I have just recently, past few months, been keeping moonlights off for 5 days a week. I keep them on over the weekends when I'm up later.

I'm curious to know if some of those controllable moon lights that follow the moon cycle make a difference. From my understanding, part of the cycle is total darkness.

ms123, do you just unplug your lights during the week then replug them in?

I have always conmsidered that my tanks get too much ambient light as it is just from me being in the room after the lights are out. To intentionally use moonlights is no different than putting an obnoxious blue light directly over your face every night while you sleep, and see if it affects the quality of your night

wakeboardgeek my lights are on timers but the fixture itself also has the on/off switches. I just hit the moonlights off on sunday night and back on on friday.

Thats a long light schedule. I only run MH and PC 7.5 hrs a day. I wonder if the electricity cost evens out with MH vs. T5 due to people run t-5 lights for longer periods during the day. Ive nver run into a t-5 guy that only runs lights on for 7.5 hrs a day.
