TOTM quality 6' SPS tank for under $1k? The 5.56 build thread; AKA a really bad idea

Ooh! Hope they're doing well, lil stn on one of them. I had Cyano awhile ago, it's long gone now but I gave you fresh cuts on fresh plugs just to make sure a lingering strand doesn't start off in your tank.

It may have been a little cyano that settled on the skeleton -- Hope not!

Not worried about it, I had a cyano outbreak in the 29 2 months ago, it mostly all died of. I noticed a few patches on the rock when I transfered it over but it's just barely hanging on.

OK, I got the electric bill for 1 full month of halides and it was $265, normaly $210. The house did not catch fire from all the heat and I have to say that i really love the look of radium 20K lamps. To my eye, every LED thank I have seen just looks dim and blue to me. I can’t imagine how much money is saved with LED but it can’t be that much.

Tank is still very new and immature, just starting to see corraline popping up on the dry rock but I just love it :)

That last frag I gave you has picked up some purple notes under that 20k for sure.

That's not a frag, it's a small colony! Thanks Tim, you are super generous.

My iPad camera distorts the colors. It's purple body, blue branches and white polyps.

Ah gotcha, my ipad does the same thing. It makes some colors really pop, sometimes in a "finally, I can capture that color" way, and sometimes in a non-realistic way.

Getting a clear picture is the bane of this hobby for me, it doesn't come easy lol.

And no worries about the frag. I always cut members and good people large frags.

You inspired me to set up a peninsula tank again. Currently getting my plumbing parts for it. 4x2x2
Will run a Red dragon speedy 230 at 50w with an ASM skimmer. Should have mine up in next 2 weeks

The tank is looking great but the ledger is not :(

The tank is really looking good, frags are encrusting and new branches are budding and colors are popping. I did lose a beautiful acan which perplexes me, best theory is that Scopus tang picked it to death but I don't know.

On to the money :(

I'm 2 1/2 months into the 30 months and I don't think I am going to make it :(

I had trouble with the radiums not always fireing. Turns out that m58 electronic ballasts will fire many m80 lamps reliably but not radiums. In the prosess of trouble shooting I bought 2 new radiums $110 shipped and a sunlight supply m80 ballest $50.

The up side is that those radiums look even better on the m80 :) ballests but the down side is that I'm low on cash :(

Sold my biocube 29 on CL $190 and a sump, accounting at the top of this post.

I am just about done acquiring coral but still need fish/clams/shrimp and I really only have perhaps $500 left in dry goods to sell. How do I go another 27 months on $648.47?

I want to catalogue my frags with photos in this thread.

Go with less expensive fish. 2-3 Springeri Damsels are <$10 ea, a nice captive bred basslet like a Fridmani, captive bred bangghais, blennies, melanarus or coris wrasse to name a few. All these are hardy, inexpensive, active, very colorful, peaceful and interesting shapes to look at. No more shrimp for me. Springeri Damsels are one of my favorite fish in my tank and they're color is amazing, very Dodgerblue

"The rules:
Any money I get from selling tank stuff can be spent on tank stuff without counting against the $1,000."

Your rules are your rules, but personally, I don't think this counts. You have to hustle to sell stuff and that's just like putting time in at work, probably even more work and that's just like spending your own cash. All those manhours are money. In fact, your time is probably more valuable than the cash spent. I say, you get double dollars deducted for any equipment flippin'! Hahahaha

Im a hobbiest not a professional. Hobbiest don't get paid professional rates for enjoying their hobby.

Me too. I hope I didn't chew your ear off long enough to make you late for your son. Hows that sump working out?

The sump is perfect, I should have picked it up weeks ago. My son gave up on me and got a ride. These are the prerks being on the football team.
Lets plan a trip to Ali's store some time soon.
