Trade/Sell Grunge from bottom of tank?

I ordered a few pounds of Grunge from Garf a few months back and I really haven't noticed any changes in my tank.

Was wondering if anyone would be willing to sell/trade/give-away any "mud" from the bottom of their mature reef.

I would really appreciate it, and am willing to travel to pick up. Thanks!

Just looking to increase the biodiversity in my tank.

I know Rod at rod's reef sells cups of his sand from his DSB. But that is more for populating a DSB with worms, ect. . Are you looking for stuff for your fuge?

If so I just ordered some "crude" from www.premiumaquatics.com they sell the rock rubble and mud fromt he bottom of their live rock pools which hosts 1000 pounds of live rock that they are constantly shipping in. And it's only $1.50 a pound and shipping is less than $10 for up to 7 pounds or more.

If that's how you want to look at it, Mike, be my guest!

It is sand and mud from their rock vats, that is bubbling with life from their rock. There are more worms, amphipods, copepods, and other creatures in a pound of that stuff than anything else I've seen sold as live sand, and that includes IPSF's.

You can dress it up any way you want... It is what it is. I try to remove detritus from my tank, not add more to it for some pods. If it were just LR rubble it would be different. :D

But to each his/her own. :p

Now that I read your signature, perhaps that's because you don't have sandbeds, so adding sand/silt makes no sense to you.

It is not adding detritus. It is rock rubble, sand and silt which we add to boost life/add diversity to our refugia, and/or to display sandbeds.

Like anyone successfully keeping a DSB, I like to boost/recharge/add life to it at least once a year. There is no better way I have found than this.

They call it grunge because it is extremely fine, almost silt. It is like the Walt Smith refugium mud in consistency. Except that they add lots of rubble rock, and the Smith stuff has no complex life in it that I can see ... no worms, snails, or other critters.

Anyway, you are the one dressing it up -- or rather down -- calling it detritus when you have never even seen it!

I ordered some and so far I am not pleased with it. I am for sure atleast 1 amphipod came with it, I havne't seen anything else yet. But I will give it some time.

It DOES look like that brown ditritus buildup I used to have on my hangon fuge I could never get down into to clean. Oh well I do agree alittle bit that I don't like the "soot". . But if there are some micro stars and worms in it, it would be well worth it. I could always suck up the brown gunk after awhile.

Eric, it takes a day or two for it to fully settle and the stuff to come out as it were. I had 2 nassarius snails in the bag, but there was no way to tell about worms, etc yet.

The soot color is why it doesn't go in the display!

But more to the point, well, how are you managing to get down there to get a good look in your fuge compartment? You lying flat on your belly?

Gotta love it when people rip other methods of reef keeping! ;)

I'd be happy to toss you a good scoop of sand from my tank.

I didn't see anyone do that in this thread?

In case anyone's counting, my PA grunge bag from this last round, added yesterday, contained: 1 nassarius snail, 3 chitons, 2 baby stomatellas, at least 4 bristleworms, 2 spaghetti worms, and the rocks are all crawling with those really small copepods... need a magnifying glass to see them. That's just what I am certain came from the bag, which was under 3lbs.

To add a positive note I just used 5 pounds to start a new HOB fuge and there was a lot of life in it..

I am very pleased.
