Tragic consequences...sad story

Well I have to tell a little tale here, but before I do please understand that I'm not looking for sympathy or anything, but I have to get this off my chest. About a week ago I purchased 100 lbs of live rock to add to my system, all of which was going and is in my new 125 sump/fuge. Ok so I was under the impression that this rock was pre-cured or least mostly cured....so upon arrival, I washed off with tank water that I had just siphoned off from a water change, the rock appeared clean, with nice coraline color and did not smell at all....in fact it had very little smell.....(1st red flag I missed)...so I added this live rock to my system and all seemed well for about 24 hours....I then noticed my Xenia was looking a bit closed up(2nd red flag).....everything else looked fine.

Next day....tank was cloudy, corals looked a bit "flat" and xenia was closed tight.....this is where all H E double hockey sticks broke loose....since last Friday I have lost over half of my sps collection, my clam and as of this post about 30 min ago, my prized mystery wrasse.

What happened?....my tank crashed from the addition of the live rock, basically an Ammonia spike like just like a new tank start up.

I know some of you are thinking ..what was I thinking by adding so much rock at once...well I'm already kicking myself in arse for that and even so called "seasoned" reefers screw up.

I would post some pictures, but I don't have the heart to do it....however on a good note, the Ammonia spike has subsided as of today and things are slowly getting back to normal....I have done 40gal water change almost every 12 hours, as fast as my R/O system can make the water...1 1/2 buckets of salt later, all the activated carbon my fluval 203 can hold and thank goodness for Bio-marine poly filters.

The survivors are..Kole tang, Foxface, copperband butterfly, algae blenny, exquisit wrasse, cardinal, orange spot goby, several sps, some lps, and some zoo's

The victims....Mystery Wrasse, Banded pipe, about (9) colonies of sps....Green millie, Bytor blue milli, Gary M's grape scrolling monti, Killer tort, and a few that I just can't think of the names........... :(

Ok to wrap up...I did isolate my sump from my tank as soon as i realized what was happening, so my sump with the 100lbs of new rock is cycling, while my tank is running on the closed loop and a few powerheads and my fluval with daily water changes.

Long story short....Think...think...think!

In a few weeks or so whn things are back to normal I do plan to add some new corals....so Nate, Jerry an anyone else that has some "Schwarzenegger" sized frags!....(skip the man sized!!!!) let me know I will be very interested..........Thanks

Geo

Oh man that ROTS:mad2: We all make mistakes just blame it on spring feaver.Glad to see things are looking up:beer:

Wow. That braks my heart and it was not even mine. Sorry to hear about this george. That setup was amazing and I am sure will be again soon. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I do not really have any coral though but I do have labor if there is anything you need or you need company driving to gt these new colonies(Frags) let me know.

Jeremy

I feel for you. I have nothing to offer frag wise but as with Jeremy if you need helping hands let me know I am only down the road in Horseheads. If it helps, I was thinking of trying to get a mini-swap of some kind scheduled for late June down at my place.

Dave

Hey Dave you should have a frag meet on the 21st of June. It is a saturday and would work out perfect for me, LOL(Its my Birthday). Just kidden but another meet local would be great and it would give george plenty of time to save up his pennys for some Macho Man sized frags.

Jeremy

Hey George: Sorry to hear. Everyone here I'm sure have pulled equivalent brain farts. Lesson to us all: Even if rock is honestly fully cured there is still going to be some die off during shipping that contribute to a nitrogen cycle and an ammonia spike. All new rock needs to be fully re-cured in a separate tank until adding to the main display.
Let me know when you need frags. I can sell good size frags at reduced prices to get you back on your feet. Any "designer" frags you have purchased from me I will replace at no charge. That includes the Bytor Tort, Purple Monster, Bytor Blue Mille (which I actually initially got from you) and any other frags that we both shared. These frags won't be large since my own colonies of these are still pretty small. But I can provide any sized frags of my established colonies. We are all a beat away from a tank crash and I know that George would help anyone else in this position. Good luck with the recovery of your system!!!

I noticed you did not say from where you got the rock. I assume the vendor said it was fully cured. Was it shipped or local? Was it wrapped in wet paper or did you transport it in tubs of water. I am just curious. I just ordered some rock that is supposed to be fully cured. It is going in a new set up with nothing in it but I was considered transferring some of my rock from my current tank at the same time.

Dave

Thanks all and I apperciate all the help and may take you guys up on it.......Jerry I will be pmi'ng on some corals for sure! The rock was fine, the quality was less than advertised, but it was clearly my mistake and yes ANY!!! and all rock should be re-cured if going into a established system...in a new its not a big deal, that is how I started my system...just dropped it an let it cycle.

Dave....if you add rock from your current tank it will suffer from the cycle, so any thing good living on it will suffer. If you do have a frag meet...let us know the date, so we can plan....I'm thining bbq, cold brewha's and frags...woohoo!

Lesson learned.........!!!!

Things are looking up....some of my surviors are showing polyp extension... :)

Oh I was able to save my Duncans and my Blue Tort...there vacationing at St.James reef :)

If anyone should come across some places that have Mystery Wrasses...please let me know....that will be my first replacement...!

Geo

i can be there as well if you need me? always glad to help. its a shame i was just there sunday and seen the tank. if there anything i can do just let me know

kyle

Damn George im so sorry to hear that. I know how it is to crash a tank. Been there. We tend to get a little complacent when things go well for a long time. I dont have colonies to get rid of but any coral in my tank is a frag in yours.

Sorry George...I wish I something to help you out with as far as corals go, but I am no where near the level of you guys :)

I think I helped with the sump though ;)

Sorry to hear it man - if I DID have anything - i would be happy to help you rebuild... but as my tank just got saltwater in it - all I can offer ismy sympathies.

Bummer Geo :( Let me know what corals you lost that you got from me and I will try to hook you up. That really sucks you lost your Mystery Wrasse! They are very pretty fish.

I have a line on a new wrasse No pun intended..lol :) Actully I would love to find a pair if that is even possible. I'll catch up with in a few weeks, when my tank is settled back down. I work in Endicott now, so I could pop over someday after work...

Just a little update on my crash........

The NH4 spike is over and I will share what I did to keep my system from totally dying.

To date since last Monday04-07-08:

(8) 40 gallon water changes as fast as my 75gpd R/) system could fill my reserve.

4 lbs of Activated carbon

5 sheets of Poly filter by bio marine

Prodibio Biodigest and Ammo stop

On Tuesday I will be adding Fritzyme #900 Turbo boost to kick my systme back up to speed.

I have still lost few more sps....however I do have survivors, how I don't know, but these are some tough corals....on a side note...other than the loss of my Pipefish and my Mystery wrasse, all of my other fish are fine and have not showed one bit of stress as in Ick or anything else.......

Geo

Well I think things are going pretty well, my system is whole again, as all running together. If I had to make a guess, I lost about 60-65% of my corals...so it's not all bad....but I got a lot of real good offers to help me get my tank back in order...I'm going to wait a couple more weeks before adding anything, so my system can finish rebuilding its biological capabilities. I have started a Prodibio regiment that I will use over the next month, so everything should be 100% by then.......

Jeremy...thanks for the concern....

Piazzon...thanks for the link

Jerry / Nate...I'll catch up with you in a few weeks to see what you got.

Everyone else...thanks and Reef on......

One side note All my encrusting Monti's and one plating monti made it thru the disaster...they are some tuff corals :)

Here is kinda how things played out....Milli's went down first...with in 48 hours (Except one..its doing fine)..then my slimers, Efflo ( 7" diameter) and puprle monster. After that its been random...but anything with larger polyps went fast....just my observation..........
