Transparent Dragon's Breath

Hi guys,

Hope somebody can give advice. I received some dragon's breath in the mail that was wrapped in a wet paper towel in a small envelope with *no* insulation that sat in my mailbox in below-freezing weather for several hours before I got it home. I did not expect the packaging to be so terrible.

I was surprised to find it alive and red when I opened it. I acclimated by putting it in a baggy to float in the water, then did a freshwater dip before rubber-banding it to a rock and placing it in the middle of the tank. I have not-good LEDs that are putting out about 40 PAR at that depth. But I read that dragon's breath does well in low light. It kept fading as it was rubber-banded and went from a deep red to an orange color and just keeps becoming more and more transparent. I hardly have other macros in the display--two shaving brushes, a small teacup macro, and one sprig of grape algae. I did not think they would outcompete the dragon's breath and I'm sad it's not doing well.

Do macros come back from being transparent? I can only attribute to the poor shipping. It's been about 6 days and just goes more transparent, almost a faded green now! Any hope?

Nope, it will die. I have had a few shipped like yours in the past and it will most certainly not come back.

Where does everybody get their macro from? I certainly won't try ebay again in the future; this seller somehow had good reviews.

Is it worth it to ask the lfs if they can get some in? It's just so cold here lately maybe I'll have to hold off.

I got mine from Reef2go..Very happy with what I got...I will send you a PM about the other place too....Done know if I can post the link here.

If your temps drop below freezing, and the macro is shipped like that, it won't make it. It does OK in lower temps for most shipping, just won't survive freezing. When you get it in, if the water is pink, the macro suffered. Once the whole macro turns bright orange, there's no coming back, it then turns clear (dead) and disintegrates. I've shipped a lot of dragon's tongue (in water though) so I know what works and what doesn't work for it!
