Travis and Jessica's 400G Build

It's a good thing you're getting rid of the couch. None of the sections are set up to view the tank properly.

Yeah those couches are huge and just don't fit the room well at all. We are still going with that basic shape for the sectional but not as long and also a smaller size couch. It would be cool to put 2 rotating recliners/lazyboy's on that end by the aquarium. When the time came to sit in front of the tank and admire, we could swing the recliners around and enjoy. I think you just gave me a pretty good idea there.

My friend came over and framed the room up for us last night. We settled on 7'x10'x8'H. Now its time to pick up some sheetrock/tape/mud, insulation, wiring/outlets, light socket/switch and a door and I think we will be able to call it a room. We are making progress so that's a good thing.

We also need to pick up some plywood for the top of the stand and some trim, wood and paint/primer to skin the stand. Homedepot has been making a killing off of us lately, LOL.

I wish I had a fishroom if I was thinking when I upgraded. I love your dobermans. They are beautiful. Keep up the good work.

I'm sure you could find a way to make it happen if you needed one, just look at that mountain of Kessils! You better tell, well warn, your visitors to bring their shades

Thanks! We LOVE Dobies, they are so loyal and intelligent. And thanks we will try, just need to keep opening the wallet and getting things done :spin2:... All of our livestock (fish/corals/snails/rock) is crammed into two 100g stock tanks downstairs, so this project is a top priority! We have had no losses in the stock tanks so far so its going good. Pretty crazy because the stock tanks were filled with 100% freshly mixed reef crystals water, I thought the parameter shift would take something down for sure. Some corals did take a hit color wise but that is to be expected I guess. All fish are out and about eating and the tangs look to be fighting as usual, bastards. :jester:

Just ordered 350lbs of dry rock. We went with regular rock for the lower part of the structure and shelf rock covering the whole top of the structure. Basically just aiming for a long reef cove look. After looking around a bit we decided to use reef rocks.net for the dry rock. Contacted reef rocks and Steve really hooked us up big time. Steve is also going to hand pick us some special shelf pieces to really step our build up a notch! So awesome. We will get some good photos up of the rock up when it arrives

Got the wood and trim to skin the stand today. Hopefully get the stand skinned and all mostly finished tomorrow.

The fact that you have Dobermans is enough to make me want to subscribe, however the tank is going to be awesome too! Excited to see more progress!

I bet he lost his. LOL With a threat if there are any scratches on her's.
Your pretty much right on the money, :lmao:

Thanks!

Hopefully we can get this thing set up and filled with water in no time at all, its a tang cage match down in the 100g stock tanks :hmm2:... AGE Should be ready to ship us the tank any day now. The last time we spoke they just needed to glue the external over flow on and let it dry/cure.

We did something similar for our build, with a garage fish room.
Here's the post with the sketch of overall floorplan

The fish room is 12' by 5' wide. Let me know if you want info about the construction of it.

The drain lines are about 19' long, with a little over 1/4 inch of rise-over-run for the distance. If you details on how that was done, look here.

We don't have the external overflow like you're planning, but drain-wise it is similar. Currently, we have dual herbie 1.5 inch into the 2 inch primary drain line, and a single 1.5 inch dry-channel durso into a dedicated 1.5 inch emergency drain line.

All this runs unbelievably quiet. We really can barely hear it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info! Luckily since we switched from the basement to the garage for the fishroom we won't have to deal with most of the prior major issues. The garage fish room will be conveniently located right on the other side of the display tank wall.

We really enjoy the photos you guys post up! Such awesome fish shots  Maybe we can get a few photography tips from you guys once we get our system up running.

Stand update. Front is skinned, went with oak to avoid nicks and dings that a softer wood sometimes accumulates over time. Plywood is on the top and also have the lower plywood floor in place inside the cabinet storage area. As you guys can see I probably went overboard in the trim section, we will see.

Should I screw the top plywood down or let it "free float" inbetween the tank and stand?

You may want to do some waterproofing in and around the stand.
Carpet does not take well to saltwater.:eek2:
Great build so far.

+1. You may want to consider cutting the carpet out around the stand and putting a nice tile down instead. Think about what would happen if you had to replace the carpet, and also leveling the tank would be easier done on hard flooring. just my opinion. I think with your room in particular a dark tile would look fantastic. awesome build and cool dogs by the way. i love dobermans

oh and also as for drilling in the top piece for the stand, I would say do it because it would just add to the strength. maybe not by much but a little bit more never hurts.

+1 on the tile. Also, I would suggest you paint the inside of the stand white so that you can see things more easily once it is crammed with equipment.

Yes, everything is getting painted white and sealed with polyacrylic. I could have coated the stand before skinning it I suppose :uhoh2:, but special care is going to be used to try and eliminate any spilling whatsoever during maintenance and coral placement. All waterchanges, testing and dosing will be done in the fishroom where the sump will be located. If a huge spill happens we are going to have more problems than just carpet, she said the tank is out of the house! :eek2: :lmao: No spills is priority # 1...

We will see about the carpet...

I have been thinking about cutting the carpet out directly where the stand will sit, but we do not plan on scrapping all the carpet in the room any time soon, because its brand new. I thought about doing ceramic tile around the tank but we plan on doing a laminate wood flooring in the future so I don't know if we really want to do tile right there. We probably should get the carpet cut soon though at least.

Thanks for the compliments!

I was thinking the same about the top pieces of plywood. Any additional strength is welcome. I also thought it may cause trouble if it moved around while trying to set the tank on the stand. I figured as long as the screws are countersunk into the plywood a little and not sticking up at all it shouldn't be a problem, but I figured might as well get some experienced input from everyone.
