Treating with Vitamin C

I have one of them too! Like I said I won't get into it! I been keeping it like this for quite some time! Somethings work for some people and not for others! Theres more than one way to do things! I know of a guy that keeps all of his corals under regular screw in bulb lighting! Not to mention he keeps clams this way too! But this thread is about the vitamin C! Bioballs will stay clean if you do proper maintanence and also run the filter floss which I do! Anywho I will keep you up to date and get the before picture!

I agree with ya there! Refugium all the way. o)

As far as the bioballs/rubble thing, as far as I understand it, the reason they are unfavorable for reef use is the actually work too good, so to speak.

In that oxygen rich environment aerobic bacteria grows which converts waste at a much better rate than anaerobic bacteria (LR). The problem with aerobic bacteria is that it doesn't break down nitrate. Anaerobic bacteria does provide a means to break down nitrates.

So in theory, you really can have a very successful tank with a wet/dry, there is just a lot more work involved. In combination with a refugium and a good skimmer you could really keep a high bio load.

That has to be the best explaination of the difference between bio balls and live rock that I have ever seen. Very well said.

Just got my Ca-Vit C. Dissolved easily in RO water. Started adding at 5ppm rate. Now everyone doses twice a day just so the level stays somewhat constant (i.e.-dose a 5ppm quantity twice a day)? I'm sure I asked this before, but just confirming as to the current thoughts on the frequency of additions.

Thanks, was nice meeting you today. I stopped by Ocean Design, pretty nice place and the prices weren't to bad either. I saw that angler there, really nice. They had a couple nice dwarf lions, thought about it but decided not to.

Thanks for the frags!

UPDATE: so I'm 6 days in on dosing powdered/buffered ester-c, and I've already noticed a pretty significant change. Here are before and after pictures (w/o actinic lighting) of my blue palys that haven't opened in over a week and a half prior to dosing my system with vitamin c. It seems my organism palys have grown a bit too.

Day 6 (Today)

Mind you, I haven't changed anything about my tank structure/maintenance regime aside from adding the vitamin c. Will post more pictures in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully, the entire blue paly colony will restore itself by then. Thanks puffer for an awesome thread.

Ill be changing my lights to HQI under 14k with T-5..i miss the vibrant colors they put out

in addition to this..asterina star fish are not preying on it lately..i guess its not in a rotting state anymore

Okay I need to go find the other Vitamin c! The ascorbate Either the sodium or the calcium as it appears no one is having side affects!

im using 1/8 tsp of that GNC Ca Vitamin daily. I just apply it for maintenance. Then i use the kent coral accelerator 10ml at wed and sundays

That's really a tiny amount to be seeing such a big imporvement. Maybe I don't need to be using so much then. I'm using 1 tsp on aproximately the same size system. I did have closed zoas though.

I dont think for my case is an improvment until I see the growth and color coming back =p ugh i miss that previous color =(

I just switched to 10k few weeks ago, but they were already faded. if i can find recent a pic under 14k ill post it.

Yeah ebrabender and puffer, the orange organisms do look fuller/brighter...especially in person. I'm just pretty happy that the blue palys are starting to open up again. Will definitely keep updating.
