Hmmm... I thought that's what I saw folks recomending. I wouldn't keep one at all... just make it into a refugeum.

As far as the bioballs/rubble thing, as far as I understand it, the reason they are unfavorable for reef use is the actually work too good, so to speak.
In that oxygen rich environment aerobic bacteria grows which converts waste at a much better rate than anaerobic bacteria (LR). The problem with aerobic bacteria is that it doesn't break down nitrate. Anaerobic bacteria does provide a means to break down nitrates.
So in theory, you really can have a very successful tank with a wet/dry, there is just a lot more work involved. In combination with a refugium and a good skimmer you could really keep a high bio load.
