Treating with Vitamin C

BTW, Since doubling the dosage to 2tsp (8900mg) or a bit over 20ppm, my blue stag is starting to bleach. None of my other SPS seem to be suffereing though. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not but I'm going back to 1/2 that dosage.

Should I frag this or will it repair on it's own? Never had a coral bleach before.

that d0oenst look like bleaching to me. that looks like necrosis

Is there any tissue and polyps where it is white pufferpunk??

If it is bare skeleton as it appears and it continuing to spread whack it. Cut it well into healthy tissue and seal any open wounds when you get done with a thin layer of superglue gel.

If the damage is done and it is not getting any worse.....then cutting isnt necessary as its already stopped on its own.......but in most cases I will cut them then anyway just to get them out of the way..

no affects, no changes. The only affect that dosing vitamin C has had on my tank is makes my skimmate smell worse than usual.

My system is set up pretty efficiently and my BM250 always does a great job. But........the skimmate smells noticably worse. The color or amount hasnt changed.......just the smell.

Good to hear that nothing negative has happened to your SPS. Any positives for your zoas?
What day into your dosing regimen are you?
Not sure if the stinkier skimmate is a good thing or not! :D Especially, if it's not any darker or copious in amount!

I'm totally clueless when it comes to SPS. What is necrosis & does this have anything to do with the VC?

necrosis is simply cells dying. Depending on what exactly caused it...or more importantly in many cases, how fast it is moving determines how we deal with it and what action to take if any.

If you are monitoring your parameters and not allowing your dosing to cause massive swings I would think it is not related. Out of curiosity.......have you tested your alkalinity before and after dosing your buffered C?? If not I highly suggest doing so.
Im curious myself how much the buffered C affects your alk in comparison to the unbuffered C.

If its stinkier...then the vitamin C dosing is allowing me to pull out something that it wasnt able to get out before even if it appears the same

Yes, I'm testing alk all the time--almost out of my Salifert & can't get any more. (What are you guys using instead of Salifert.?) Stays pretty steady ~10 but I haven't had to add any alk in weeks.

What are you guys using instead of Salifert.?

For now I am using API, it is easy and very cheap - but the resolution is a whole dKH, so I am hoping Salifert gets back on track, I like higher resolution for things like adjusting Ca reactors. But the API seems to be fine for routine testing.

Well, I'm happy to say, Sellout came by to see my tanks & said the problem with my stag isn't due to VC, so I'll continue dosing as before, around 35ppm.

I found some classic Berkeley hippie stuff, natures natural crystals or something, it was ascorbic acid+calcium. I mixed a dose in RO water and ran a ph test, it was ph neutral. I suggest everyone try this first before dosing, even if you get buffered V-C.

Also, make sure your Alk is up, this will help resist possible ph drop from ascorbic acid dosing.

Cheers,

Josh

Was this due to C, or prior to dosing?

This was due to growth spurts causing a BIG drop in calcium and I wasnt dosing at the time...

Well i have noticed one side effect that im not happy about but it also can serve to help others. I dose DT's for my Pods and Corals and Since i started dosing VC my tank has turned into a green water culture! Something for those who grow there own green water to try!

When the simbiotic zooxanthellae on the corals produce food by photosinthesys it also creates oxidants like oxygen peroxide that can damage the coral so the coral has to either create an antioxidant or expell the zooxanthellae (bleach) to get rid of it.
Vitamin C being an antioxidant could help the coral reduce the stress caused by the oxidants.

In other words the benefit of the vitamin is not because the coral uses it as a vitamin (like we do) but because the vitamin reduces the stress of the oxidants on the corals.
Thanks now that i understood!

I also dose DT's phtyo, w/o that result. How much do you add?

Well Most of the bottle i bought was used in a Rotifer culture i think there was about 2 cap fulls left that i dosed, but im also dealing with a MUCH smaller water volume than you are my tank is only 20g! What i found to be funny AND encouraging all at the same time was that the DT's Didnt start Growing till AFTER i dosed VC then it just went NUTS my tank looks like i dumped 2 full bottles of DT's in it!

I'm starting to notice that the scourge of my tank, red turf algae is turning brown & fluffier. Maybe dying? I can only hope the C is killing it!

Ok just went through the entire thread and sent everyone (85 of you) a PM to go and write down their data so we can all check it out.

lets see who actually goes and does it.

Puff - Nice meeting you today!
