Treating with Vitamin C

Going to give dosing VC a shot, from what I've read looks very promising. I order from Iherb, and just a heads up, the company is offering a coupon online for first time customers, $5.00 off no min purchase, the total with shipping amounted to about $6.00 instead of $11.00. Just do a search online for coupons under the company's name, and you should easily find one. Good luck everyone.

I've been very clear in my posts that don't yet blame the VC nor would I without reproducible evidence. Please do not put words in my mouth.
I totally apologize, that was not my intention.

no worries :)

I'm happy to say I'm about 90% certain the VC was not the problem. I'm very comfortable stating that its not responsible for my monti bleaching. As it turns out, I happen to have a frag of the same coral in my frag tank (which is part of the same system) and its completely unaffected.

The bleaching of the monti and the poor extension of the RBTA is likely due to changes I made recently to the flow regime of my tank. At or around the same time I started the VC I also added eductors to my returns and altered to flow patterns in my tank. Honestly, I think there was too much flow for the nem and the flow hitting the monti was not diffuse enough. I'm still not quite sure why I didn't examine this as a possible explanation to begin with.

I have cranked down and redirected my returns to help alleviate this issue. The RBTA is still closed up but its improving. I think the monti will also come back strong but if not, I have a good backup frag and its a fast grower.

I'm still going to wait a couple week before trying the VC again just to be on the safe side. However, I don't want to wait too long... I have some Ked's Reds that are in poor shape at the moment and need a little help :)

When something changes in my tank, my nem either moves or splits. When the pH & alk dropped a bit, after using the non-buffered C, it split 2x in 2 weeks. Heck, it was getting too big anyway--hadn't split in over a year and a 1/2. It sure was beautiful though.

can somebody please explain the buffered part to me

Vit C is an acid. Buffered Vit C has Na, Mg, or Ca added to it to raise the pH of the supplement 7.0 (I think). This prevents drastic drops in your pH due to the addition of the supplement.

Not sure how it all adds up with shipping and your coupon, but allhealthtrends.com has the vitamin c for slightly cheaper with only 4.95 shipping, free over $100.

so are vitamin c crystals not a good idea? or could i get away with it , i bought some seachem marine buffer to help deal with the ph issue, could i just add that on a regular schedule or something to help balance out the effects of the vit c?

i did this at first, didnt think it mattered as I could deal with it but now after doing this I dont recpommend it. I had some light issues thatwere mostly unrelated, but this added to them.......just the same. Get the buffered.

ok i'm going to order some buffered vitamin c, your right it's not worth dealing with fluctuating ph. i've been checking out i-herb.com, all i see are the tablet form does it make a difference if i use tablet or powder? sorry if this is a stupid question

There are no stupid questions. you are dumping something in your tank that messes with yoru water chemistry........ in fact I believe that the vitamin C isnt directly doing anything to your corals in the first place.........but its indirectly affecting them via what it does to your water chemistry.

That is just a speculation based on what other more chemistry knowledgable people have said along with what I have witnessed with the dosing.....and I really dont have a clue what exactly is going on.......but its what i believe at this point.

Use the crystals. They arent loaded with fillers you dont want in yoru tank
