Treating with Vitamin C

I have been dosing VC for alittle over a month now. This is what I use NutriBiotic, Sodium Ascorbate Crystalline Powder, 16 oz (454 g) I dose 3 3/4 tsp daily, I have not noticed any colr changes or growth changes the only change I have noticed is that I can not keep my ALK from rising. When I noticed a problem with how the tank looked after two weeks of dosing I tested ALK and it shot up to 20 yes 20. I of course was panicking and did WC over the next few days. lowered ALK to 12. Continued to dose VC and ALK keeps rising. Has anyone experienced the same. VC is the only thing I can think that is causing the increase in ALK. By the way PH flucuates between 8.2 and 8.4. Any thoughts?

I'm very curious to see how it goes for you. Be very very careful... your tanks are small so a little bit will go a long way. Can't wait to hear !

That is quite a lot of VC you are adding (16,680gm--around 50ppm). Why so much? Did you start at a lower dosage? Were you having issues with your corals?

It is the same product I use (dosing at around 13ppm with great results, just lowered it by half [was dosing 25ppm]) & without dosing alk for a week, it just tested at 7.4. Are you dosing/dripping anything for alk?

Also, are you using any sort of chemical remover, like carbon or Purigen?

Yeah definently. I cut the dose quite a bit, starting small less then 1/4 tsp.

That's about right, I use 1/4 tsp in my 15g. You should test your nitrate before & after a week. You'll be surprised!

I am accually dosing 2 3/4 tsp not 3 3/4 typo, I stopped dosing ALK when I noticed things going south and then tested. Did the WC got Alk to 12 but it is still creeping up. I run 2 reactors carbon and gfo but I turn them on in am dose VC at 1000 pm. I started dosing just like Puffer suggested raised it each day until I got to 2 /4 tsp. Should I cut back on VC? Is that what is causing ALK to rise? Thanks Puffer for any help you see to be the most knowledgable with VC.

How much should i be looking at dosing each day in a 10gal ideally? I know its not the best option for a tank, but i'd like to try this out and see my results.

SW_nOOb_SC, If you can measure out 1/2 tsp & raise it to 1/4 tsp a week later. I dose 2x/day.

ZAZA71, Here is the chart again:

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC

What actually are you treating for? If you just want a boost in your corals, 5-10ppm is plenty. I was dosing at ~30ppm for about 6 months but now that everything is doing so well, I've cut that in half.

Do you think 5-10 ppm would be safe for a startup dosage?

I'm using very mature rock and sand in my new system, probably the water from my current tanks too (will do some big water changes once the new system is rolling and cycled).

I want to begin with the established tank contents that I have, then clean the bejesus out of it with my new setup.

To early for me to really prove results but i'm starting to see more polyps open (mainly my PPEs) and the polyps themselves look healthier on all frags. Like i said its to early to tell for sure but this is the only thing i am changing in my setup so i will be able to tell once changes do occur.

Only been dosing for a few days. Hope its just not my eyes playing tricks on me.

OK, I think it's time that folks start sending me a couple frags of their favorite corals the VC has saved for thim. Especially PPEs. It's only fair! :D

Thats actually how i am dosing, Being that its a such a small tank i figure using it in top off is safer then adding directly to the tank. So far i've found it to work fine.
